Advocacy and Empowerment for Minorities
Project Description:
The Advocacy and Empowerment for Minorities Unit at the IDHD is committed to developing model programs that will address the growing needs of African-Americans and Latinos who have a disability. Projects conducted in this program attempt to provide individuals with disabilities and their families with empowering strategies for improving the quality of their lives.
Current Projects Include (these are also listed as seperate projects in the NIRS database):
1. Community-Based Assistive Technology Pilot study in the Latino Community.
2. Successful Transitions to Desireable Outcomes for Youth with Disabilties.
3. The College Connection to Career Development - Opportunities for Minority Youth Adults with Disabilities.
4. Falling through the gaps: low income ethnic minority young mothers with learning disabilities.
5. Project Disability Bullet: a peer training disability and violence service model.
6. Spreading the Word: An Extension of the Disabling Bullet Project
7. Recruiting Mentors to Promote Goal Attainment of Youth with Disabilities: A Step Toward Self Reliance
8. Taking it to the streets: minority individuals with disabilties seeking to improve access.
