State Mental Health Project: Nurturing Positive Behaviors

Center:
Fiscal Year:
2008
Contact Information:
Project Description:
Partners in this Early Childhood Mental health consultation project designed a program expanding the system of care for children with emotional and behavioral challenges in the Omaha and Lincoln communities. This project will address concerns identified in the "From Neurons to Neighborhoods" publication that indicated 44% of infants under the age of one are receiving non-parental childcare, with the percentage growing each year of life, such that over 70% of four year olds receive non-parental care. Therapists involved in the project will provide: 1) on-site mental health consultation to childcare teachers including individual student and classroom observation; 2) education and support for teachers and administrators to assist them in identifying and working more effectively with children with challenging behaviors; 3) clinical and assessment services to children and their families with identified needs; 4) case management and referral to help families access therapeutic mental health services outside the program.
