Intensive Early Intervention Project
Project Description:
Over the life of the project IEI Services included:
1) Intake and Private Special Parenting course for each family identified as having a child with autism included a 5-session, 10-hour training: Assess child and family characteristics and needs. Connect to DD support services. Educate family about autism, service options, and IEI treatment and its impact on families. Special needs of children with autism, and special parenting for children with autism. Technical assistance is offered to help the parents establish a school-based special education program.
2) Technical assistance to parents to support a school-based program of preschool special education (an alternative to home-based IEI). Some parents do not choose, or cannot manage, IEI home-based treatment for autism. The best alternative for their child is a comprehensive school-based program of special education that will provide structure and special services during the child's preschool years. We provided ongoing technical assistance to parents (and teachers) on the design of a school-based program which fulfills the child's right to a free and appropriate education.
3) Family Only Treatment: Family life is stabalized by providing hands-on training and certification of all caregivers in safety training, planned activities, behavior problems, and on-going assessment of the productivity of the child's schedule.
4) Home-based IEI Treatment of Autism: Twenty to thirty months of daily training, consultation, and case management under supervision for family members, caregivers, and family volunteers to enable them to deliver specialized autism treatment to their preschool child.
5) Intensive Guidance Through School Year 1: On-going training and consultation for parents and school personnel for the 1st school year to insure a successful first year in a regular education classroom.
