Effects of Discrete Trial Training and Peer Modeling on Imitation
Product Description:
Introduction-
-Imitation serves as a method for learning and communication.
-Children diagnosed with autism often are unsuccessful at this skill and need training to acquire imitation skills.
-Literature on imitation skills proposed the use of a peer model within discrete trial training (DTT) sessions to administer prompting and reinforcement (Anderson et al., 2009).
-Traditionally DTT involves a child and an adult working together on a one-on-one basis (Smith, 2001).
-Adding a peer model to DTT sessions to administer prompting and reinforcement may influence the child.
-The purpose of the current study is to assess the effects of discrete trial training and peer modeling on the
acquisition of imitation of a child diagnosed with autism.
Abstract-
Imitation is a developmental process that serves as a method for learning and communication. Children who have been diagnosed with autism often are unsuccessful at this skill and need imitation training to acquire the necessary imitation skills. Several methods have been described to teach imitation skills to children with disabilities. Recent literature on the evaluation and training of imitation skills proposed the use of a peer model within discrete trial training (DTT) sessions to administer prompting and reinforcement (Anderson et al., 2009). However, traditionally DTT involves a child and an adult working together on a one-on-one basis (Smith, 2001). Adding a peer model to DTT sessions to administer prompting and reinforcement may influence the child on many levels. Therefore, the purpose of the current study is to assess the effects of discrete trial training and peer modeling on the acquisition of imitation of a child diagnosed with autism. A reversal design embedded within a multiple baseline across tasks design was used to evaluate the effects of DTT and peer modeling on the acquisition of imitation.
