AUCD Welcomes Ben Jackson as Disability Policy Leadership Fellow
W. Ben Jackson III is currently serving as the AUCD Disability Policy Fellow for 2014-2015. He graduated from The Dickinson School of Law at The Pennsylvania State University in May of 2104. Prior to joining the AUCD he worked with Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy and Law) at the Kennedy Krieger Institute as a law clerk. Read more...

Montana UCEDD Welcomes a New Associate Director
On September 1, 2014, Catherine Ipsen assumed the role of Associate Director at the Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities. Catherine comes to this responsibility with more than two decades experience at the Rural Institute, Montana's UCEDD. Seminal Publication on Early Childhood Teacher Education Wins Article of the Year (NC UCEDD/LEND)
The Journal of Early Childhood Teacher Education has awarded Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center senior scientist Pamela J. Winton, University of Pennsylvania scholar Marylou Hyson, and University of Oklahoma-Tulsa lead author Diane M. Horm with the Taylor & Francis Distinguished Article of the Year for 2013. Horm, Hyson, and Winton published "Research on Early Childhood Teacher Education: Evidence from Three Domains and Recommendations for Moving Forward" in a special issue of the journal. Read more...

NDCPD (ND UCEDD) Works with a Captionist in Oklahoma to Provide Bilingual Services in New York City
NDCPD, at Minot State University has successfully developed a wide range of programs serving the needs of people with disabilities, among them is Remote Realtime Online Captioning (RROC). RROC is an integrated system that uses NDCPD's servers, software and the Internet to translate audio in a classroom to text on a student's computer. Read more...

UC (OH UCEDD), Partners Awarded Funding to Address Health Care Gaps
The University of Cincinnati (UC) College of Nursing, along with the UC College of Medicine and partners at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center and UC's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities, has received funding to develop programs to grow in number and better prepare practitioners to meet the primary care and mental health care needs of the Ohio Medicaid population. Secret Agent Society: Establishing an Innovative Social Skills Intervention within a Community Mental Health Setting: Outcomes and Moving Forward (USC CA UCEDD)
Post-doctoral Psychology Fellows in the APA-accredited training program at Children's Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA), associated with the USC University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) recently completed a second pilot program addressing social skills in children with Autism. Secret Agent Society (SAS) is a small group intervention, developed by Renae Beaumont, Ph.D. of the University of Queensland Australia. It has demonstrated efficacy at improving social skills and knowledge of emotion regulation techniques among children with Asperger's diagnoses (Beaumont & Sofronoff, 2008). Read more...

"Communication Skills"- A New Module Available for LEND and UCEDD Trainees (WIHD NY UCEDD/LEND)
Module 2: Communications Skills is designed to help LEND and UCEDD trainees increase knowledge and skills about communicating with people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) in the areas of: health care and wellness encounters with people with I/DD; universal design in written and electronic communication; language use to demonstrate respect; supporting self-determination in health; the use of technology to enable effective communication; communication with people with sensory challenges and language differences; and working with interpreters. Midwest LEND Consortiums Collaborative Quality Improvement Planning Project
Eighteen LEND faculty from Iowa, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and South Dakota met in Kansas City on July 16-17 for an "Effective Adult Learning" workshop, facilitated by Alexis Petri, EdD, the Director of Interdisciplinary Training at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Institute for Human Development. The first day of the workshop focused on the characteristics of the adult learner, including adult learning theories, motivation, barriers to participation and the implications for teaching adults in college classroom and professional development settings. On the second day, participants discussed the adult learning environment and examined strategies for facilitating adult learning, including action learning, experiential learning, project based learning, and self-directed learning. UCLA PEERS Clinic (USC CA UCEDD) at the American Psychological Association Convention 2014
Dr. Elizabeth Laugeson and members of her research team presented recent study findings on the PEERS® intervention at the American Psychological Association (APA) Convention in Washington, D.C. Dr. Laugeson, Director of Training at the Tarjan Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities at UCLA and Director of The Help Group- UCLA Autism Research Alliance, is the Founder and Director of the UCLA PEERS® Clinic, an outpatient program providing an evidence-based, parent-assisted social skills intervention for adolescents and young adults with Autism Spectrum Disorder. Federal and State Updates
Implementation of the New Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) Regulation is Underway
Advocates from across the country have been working hard to get involved with the implementation of the new Home and Community-Based Services (HCBS) regulation. The new rule defines the community settings where Medicaid will fund HCBS and creates rules for person-centered planning. State advocates looking for examples to follow should look at Wisconsin's Take A Stand on the Plan website, a portal for individuals and families to learn about the rule and submit their comments on Wisconsin's plan. Many new resources are available on HCBSadvocacy.org, including a daily-updated list of state plan comment deadlines and new materials on transition, quality indicators, and more. Read more...
