Stories from Young Adults with Disabilities about Spirituality and Their Transition to Independence (OR UCEDD)

The Interfaith Disabilities Network of Oregon (IDNO) sponsored its second annual conference on spirituality and disability, Beyond the Ramp: Treat Me as a Member, Not a Mission. Held in a Portland-based university setting, approximately 60 people including members of the clergy, lay leaders, people with disabilities and their families attended this event.

IOD Program Participants Work to Pass Groundbreaking Legislation (NH UCEDD/LEND)

On Thursday, May 7, 2015 Governor Maggie Hassan signed into law SB-47, which repealed statutes allowing employers to pay individuals with disabilities less than the state minimum wage because of their disability status. New Hampshire is the first state in the country to pass this legislation.

Mobile App in Delaware Empowers Young Adults with Special Healthcare Needs (DE UCEDD)

Healthy Transitions is a new mobile application designed by the University of Delaware's Center for Disabilities Studies to help young adults with special healthcare needs build skills needed to gain independence and manage their own healthcare. The app features videos that explain how to handle real life scenarios and an interactive game to reinforce the ideas presented in the videos. The videos are categorized into four sections; healthcare, insurance, healthy lifestyles and relationships.

Vermont LEND has a New Name!

The Vermont LEND is proud to announce that on May 1, 2015, they have officially changed their program's name from Vermont Interdisciplinary Leadership Education for Health Professionals (VT-ILEHP) to Vermont Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (VT LEND).

Act Early Northeast Regional Developmental Screening, Referral and Response Conference

The Act Early Ambassadors from the Northeast States have news to share on the Northeast Regional Developmental Screening, Referral and Response Conference scheduled on May 21 and May 22 in Hartford, CT. The conference will provide a unique opportunity to exchange national and state information on early identification, developmental screening, referral and response strategies and time for state teams to enhance state autism plans. Each state invited up to fourteen stakeholders committed to early identification, developmental screening, and referral and response activities. Breakout sessions are woven in to the agenda to allow time for state teams to gather and identify two to four strategies and outcomes to enhance their state autism plan.

Ohio State's TOPS Program Celebrates its first Commencement (OH UCEDD/LEND)

A soft recording of "Pomp and Circumstance" played as the doors to the Ross Heart Hospital auditorium swung open to reveal a line of seven beaming soon-to-be-graduates. Wearing traditional black robes and scarlet and gray tassels, the students - the first graduating cohort from the Transition Options in Postsecondary Settings program - walked single file to their seats at the front of the room, sat down and eagerly awaited for their moment to walk across the stage and receive their certificates at a commencement ceremony held on Friday.

New York State Partnerships in Employment (NYS PIE): Helping to advance Employment First Policy in NY (NY UCEDD/LEND)

Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities (SCDD) at the University of Rochester Medical Center, currently directs the New York State Partnerships in Employment Project (NYS PIE). NYS PIE is a Project of National Significance funded by AIDD to promote systems alignment in support of competitive, integrated employment for youth and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. One deliverable of this effort is to coordinate with state agencies and relevant stakeholder groups to advance the development of an Employment First Policy for New York.

2,000 Participants Learn About Disabilities Through The Boggs Center's (NJ UCEDD) Disability Trivia Prize Wheel Booth at Rutgers Day

On April 25, 2015, The Boggs Center participated in Rutgers Day, an annual, family-oriented open house held on the Douglass/Cook, College Avenue, and Busch Campuses to highlight the University's schools, centers, institutes, and programs as well as the valuable contributions Rutgers makes to those in New Jersey and beyond. This year's event was attended by a record 91,000 people on all three campuses.

Military Flag Dedicated to Kennedy Krieger (MD UCEDD/LEND)

On December 11, 2014, the Department of Neuropsychology hosted a special guest at its annual holiday party-Captain Michael Yates, US Army. Dr. Yates is a former neuropsychology doctoral trainee who recently returned from a tour of duty in Afghanistan with the 2nd Brigade Combat Team 101st Airborne Division. During his service as an Army psychologist in the Laghman Province of Eastern Afghanistan, Dr. Yates arranged for an American flag to be flown in honor of Kennedy Krieger Institute on June 20, 2014, at the Forward Operating Base Gamberi, in recognition of all who have served in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.
