Institute on Disability and Human Development (IL UCEDD) Faculty Provide Presentations Abroad.

  • Transition into Higher Education. Dr. Fabricio Balcazar was invited by the Colombian Ministry of Education and the Colombian Association of Universities as a keynote speaker on a national conference entitled "Steps towards an inclusive higher education" in Bogota on August 13–14, 2007.
  • Policy and Research. Dr. Glenn Fujiura presented at the Global Policy Summit on the Well-being of People with Intellectual Disabilities (October 5–7) in Shanghai, China. The Summit was a policy and research forum sponsored by Special Olympics International, China Disabled Persons Federation, UNICEF, Ford Foundation, UNESCO, Wenzhou Medical College, and the Harvard Project on Disability. Best Practices in Quality of Life and Supported Living Prompt the Adoption of SIS Assessment Tool for People with Intellectual Disability in Italy. An Italian language version of the Supports Intensity Scale (SIS) assessment tool is now being used with 1,800 people with intellectual disabilities across all regions in Italy through a government-funded project. “SIS is what we have been waiting for,” says Dr. Mauro Leoni, co-translator of SIS in Italian. Dr. Leoni explains that in Italy, the Supports Intensity Scale is part of a national movement to create best practice standards in quality of life for people living with an intellectual disability.

Opportunities

MIUSA Exchange Program. Mobility International USA (MIUSA) is currently accepting applications from highly motivated high school students with and without disabilities from throughout the U.S. for their Youth Citizenship for Disability Inclusion Exchange Program. MIUSA will provide appropriate accommodations to each qualified participant with a disability, including ASL interpretation and alternative formats. In this program youth will travel to Bahrain; expenses will be covered. Application deadline is November 19, 2007.

Requests for Doctoral Theses for Disability & Society Journal. The journal Disability & Society has announced that it will start listing completed doctoral theses in the field of disability studies. The journal has issued an open invitation for doctoral dissertations completed in the field since 2000. It will publish these listings in future issues to serve as a resource for the field. Contact Helen Oliver and send the following information: Name of author, Title of thesis, University awarding the degree, A 100 word synopsis of the thesis, and E-mail contact address.

UN Handbook on the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The United Nations Human Rights Office and partners launched a handbook that helps to explain the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities so that lawmakers and advocates can better understand the treaty's provisions.

World Health Organization (WHO) Atlas on Country Resources in Intellectual Disabilities. The Montral WHO Collaborating Centre for Research and Training in Mental Health at the Douglas University Institute in Mental Health and the Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse at the World Health Organization in Geneva have published a World Atlas on intellectual disability. This is the first atlas on global resources for persons with intellectual disability (Atlas-ID) and we believe important as a resources both in research, planning and policy for many professionals, administrators and politicians around the world.

Virtual Encyclopedia of Early Childhood Development. Canada's Centre of Excellence for Early Childhood Development recently launched a virtual Encyclopedia of Early Childhood Development that provides current scientific knowledge on 33 topics related to the psychosocial development of the child, from conception to the age of five.
