Other Conditions:

This position is an 11-month full-time, three-year appointment as the Director of CDS, annual renewal based on satisfactory performance and department need. Should the candidate no longer serve as the Director, the position will revert to an Associate Specialist or Specialist. General or special funds, contingent upon position clearance and need. Appointment scheduled to begin August 1, 2016. Selectee is required to complete the COE New Faculty orientation in the first year and pass a criminal background check.

Duties and ResponsibilitiesAdminister, lead and manage diverse faculty and staff of the University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), a multi-million dollar research unit and one of 67 such centers nationally.

Provide leadership within and across education, health, and habilitation disability communities to address issues impacting the quality of life of persons with disabilities;

Provide direction to interdisciplinary grant and project development teams;

Lead the development of concepts and preparation of successful grant proposals for extramurally funded research and training;

Write competitive grant applications that support the mission of the unit;

Develop new and sustain existing collaborations successfully with the College of Education and other university units and with federal, state, and private funding agencies;

Manage complex unit budgets;

Recruit, hire, supervise and evaluate personnel;

Serve as a member of the College of Education Dean's leadership team;

Other duties as needed.


Associate Specialist Minimum Qualifications


Earned doctorate in education, health, disability, or human service field related to persons with disabilities;

Ten years of experience in the field of disability and diversity reflecting points in time across the lifespan;

Five years of administrative leadership within a large research and training center;

Experience leading and conducting interdisciplinary research and training activities;

Extensive experience writing and securing competitive grants and managing extramural research and training funds;

Ability to secure and leverage public and private funds to achieve organizational objectives;

Demonstrated experience leading and mentoring faculty in the successful development of competitive extramural grant applications;

Demonstrated leadership, teaming, and interpersonal communication skills;

Record of scholarship and publication in the field of disability studies;

Any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience that provides the required education, knowledge, skills, and abilities as indicated.


Specialist Minimum Qualifications

In addition to the Associate Specialist Minimum Qualifications:

Evidence of increasing productivity and professional maturity in the field of specialization.

A minimum of four years of experience at the rank of Associate Specialist or equivalent.

Evidence of significant interaction and leadership with the broader professional community.


Desirable Qualifications
Experience in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities.

National and/or international recognition as a leader in one or more of the involved disciplines in the field of disabilities.

Experience working in multicultural settings with diverse cultures and communities including familiarity with Hawai‘i and the Pacific islands.

Demonstrated experience with national and international partnerships.

Success developing teams and promoting effective partnerships.

Success developing and maintaining a diverse funding portfolio.

Demonstrated experience creating innovative revenue streams, entrepreneurial endeavors, and/or sustainable partnerships.
