Position Description Overview:
This position will work full time as a member of a team of professionals on several secondary and postsecondary education projects for students with and without disabilities. These projects are primarily research and evaluation, demonstration, and technical assistance and training in focus. The position will also support the development of new research and evaluation grants and contracts with federal and state agencies, schools and school districts, youth serving community-based organizations, postsecondary programs and other social and community development organizations focused on improving policies and practices for youth and young adults with and without disabilities.

Program Overview:
The Institute on Community Integration (ICI) is a federally designated Center of Excellence on Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD). The mission of ICI is to improve policies and practices to ensure that all children, youth and adults with disabilities are valued by, and contribute to, their communities of choice. This accomplished through collaborative research and evaluation, training and information sharing. ICI works with service providers, educators, advocacy and self-advocacy organizations, policymakers, and researchers around the state, country and world to provide state-of-the-art research and information on practices that support the community integration of individuals with disabilities.

Required Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or M.A./M.S. degree is required in special education, general education, social work, or related field.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience designing, implementing and managing research, evaluation, and/or demonstration projects.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience developing and/or supporting the development of competitive proposals for funding research, evaluation and/or demonstration projects.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience locate, review and synthesize research and public policy communications and publications to stay up-to-date on the state of the art in the person's area of expertise.
  • A minimum of 3 years experience providing supervision to other professionals.
  • A minimum of 3 years developing and maintaining strategic relationships with partners, community members, organizations, etc.
  • Demonstrated record of strong analytic and writing skills by writing and submitting manuscripts to journals, preparing technical reports and writing other documents.
  • Experience presenting research findings to researchers, faculty, and other academic professionals.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. preferred in the designated fields of special education, general education, social work, or related field.
  • Ability to comply with University of Minnesota human subject's procedures when implementing research, and provide ongoing oversight to research staff for all research using human subjects.
  • Ability to select, develop, and test research and evaluation instrumentation.
  • Ability to recruit study subjects for research projects
  • Ability to conduct and oversee data collection activities, including participant data records.
  • Ability to translate the data collected for a research or evaluation project into a format that can be analyzed using appropriate discipline specific strategies
  • Develop publications suitable for broad dissemination through ICI's web sites.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Research and Evaluation Planning and Implementation: (70%)

  • Locate, review and synthesize research and public policy communications and publications to stay up-to-date on the state of the art in the person's area of expertise (e.g., literature reviews, scoping or systematic reviews)
  • Design, implement and manage research projects as appropriate
  • Ensure up-to-date and effective analyses plans are built into all research projects by authoring these sections of grants
  • Complete human subject's applications, follow University of Minnesota procedures when implementing research, and provide ongoing oversight to research staff for all research using human subjects
  • Select, develop, and test research instrumentation
  • Ability to develop and test interventions to be implemented in in educational settings
  • Ability to select and inform qualified study subjects/individuals for research project participation,
  • Identify and enroll strategic partners in research and development projects
  • Analyze data to summarize findings and study results.
  • Prepare reports, journal articles and other documents to disseminate study results.

Grant Writing and Grant Management (15%)

  • Seek funding to advance research projects by exploring funding sources, writing proposals, and obtaining funding for a program of research through grants, external sales, contracts and consultation
  • Develop and/or support the development of competitive proposals for funding research activities
  • Write periodic (e.g. monthly, quarterly and annual) progress reports for funders describing progress on funded projects (grants, fellowships, external sales)
  • Monitor and ensure operations are within budget allocations
  • Ensure adequate staffing to achieve grant outcomes
  • Maintain effective communication and relationships with organizations that fund research including with project officers
  • Seek funding to advance program development by exploring funding sources, writing proposals, external sales contracts and through consultation.

Disseminate and Translate Research Findings to Various Stakeholders (15%)

  • Write, edit or critique technical reports describing research results to sponsors or funders of the research
  • Proof text, tables, data analysis files for technical errors
  • Submit written descriptions of research for peer review or juried publications (including journal articles, books, and book chapters)
  • Present research findings to researchers, faculty, and other academic professionals in the person's field of expertise (Spoken presentations, poster or written work summaries for display, panels and other formats)

Appointment and Salary Information:  This is a 12-month (A-base) professional administrative appointment. Continuation of this appointment is contingent upon availability of funding and satisfactory performance. The salary range for this position is $54,500-$70,000. Salary will be determined based on skills and experience.
