About The Arc: The Arc is the world's largest nonprofit, community-based organization advocating for and serving people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD), including Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, cerebral palsy and other diagnoses. The Arc has a network of about 700 chapters across the country promoting and protecting the human rights of people with I/DD and actively supporting their full inclusion and participation in the community throughout their lifetimes.  In addition to individual advocacy and public policy efforts at the local, state and national level, The Arc is the largest provider of services and supports for people with I/DD and their families.

Position Summary:
The Arc is seeking an intern to assist program staff on the Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASDs) Prevention Project, a HRSA-funded cooperative agreement to increase health care provider knowledge of the risks alcohol can pose to a fetus and encourage the use of FASD prevention strategies and provide educational opportunities to health care providers. During the spring and summer of 2015, this will include assisting local chapters carry out FASD program initiatives; preparing social media messaging and web updates; assisting with mailings and data analysis; assisting with preparing reports and presentations for conferences; participating in webinars produced by The Arc; participating in staff meetings as schedule permits; collecting testimonials and assisting with other FASD prevention initiatives. This internship will assist with duties across program activities as needed, and responsibilities can be tailored to the interest of the candidate where possible. As The Arc looks to expand its programs in the area of health and health care, this intern may also have the opportunity to work on new programs as they are developed.

Responsibilities:
Assist staff with mailings and data entry, social media and messaging, reports, outreach, meetings, and other duties as assigned within the scope of responsibility and requirements of the job.

Ongoing job duties may include

  •  Assisting with researching and writing program materials
  •  Providing logistical support to the team for planning and implementing meetings
  •  Collecting data and testimonials  
  •  Assisting with webinars
  •  Attending team meetings and participating in brainstorming and program design activities

Qualifications:

  • Interest or major in Human Services, Public and Nonprofit Management, disability studies, advocacy, health promotion and education, public health, or a related field. Graduate or undergraduate candidates will be considered.
  • Experience with health promotion or public health (work, volunteering, or coursework) preferred
  • Ability to conduct in-depth, detail-oriented internet research and communicate the results in writing
  • Proficiency in basic Microsoft programs
  • Ability to interact professionally in an office setting

Learning Objectives:

  • Learn how to plan, coordinate, execute, and finalize a government funded project
  • Develop and implement strategies in accordance with overall goals and objectives of the FASD Prevention Project and The Arc
  • Write and/or review project correspondence, reports, blogs, and project messaging
  • Learn how to effectively deal with a variety of situations and find appropriate solutions
  • Develop a working knowledge of various job processes and/or duties
