The Student Accessibility Services Office is responsible for providing academic accommodations for students with documented disabilities enrolled in the division of arts, sciences, and engineering. In providing and determining eligibility for accommodations, Student Accessibility Services Office fulfills the university's legal responsibilities under section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act as amended. To request academic accommodations, students must submit documentation to Student Accessibility Services, which determines eligibility for services and reasonable forms of accommodation according to the student's needs. Student Accessibility Services provides accommodations such as alternative-format textbooks, note-takers, distraction-free exam conditions, tutors, academic counseling, and various forms of assistive technology. The disability services office also hires, coordinates, and supervises specialized consultants such as cart reporters and sign-language interpreters. Student Accessibility Services educates and informs faculty of their obligations and responsibilities to students with disabilities. The Student Accessibility Services office serves as a single entry point for students on the Medford campus who require accommodations to their co-curricular student life, including housing and residential life accommodations, collaborating with other offices to ensure that students with disabilities have equal access to facilities and activities on campus.

The Assistant Director will be an integral part of the Student Accessibility Services team. The Assistant Director will support the Director in the management of the office staff, graduate students, and service provision to students. The Assistant Director will provide disability related counseling and reasonable accommodation support to students with mobility, sensory, and/or physical impairments and/or medical conditions throughout their time at Tufts. Types of support provided by the Accessibility Specialist may include arranging of outside services (CART, O&M, ASL) equal access to class participation, as well as ongoing meetings with students to ensure accommodations are meeting student needs. The Assistant Director collaborates with supportive departments and resources for students requiring co-curricular supports and modifications.

  • Works with students to develop appropriate curricular and co-curricular accommodation/modification plans;
  • Provides on-going support for student across academic years;
  • Procures and coordinates with students, faculty, and staff, outside accommodation services (CART, ASL, O&M);
  • Serves as intermediary between students and faculty to arrive at a-typical accommodations and modifications;
  • Reviews incoming documentation for students requesting accommodations, particularly those with modifications needed in housing and outside services and makes recommendations for appropriate accommodations/ modifications to the Director.
  • Maintains records of all student, staff, faculty interactions;
  • Represents SAS on institutional committees.

Basic Requirements:

Bachelor Degree in Education, Special Education, Child Development, Psychology or related field with 3-5 years of higher education experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree in Education, Special Education, Child Development, Communication Disorders or Disability Studies.
