Assistant Professor (tenure track) - Life Course Outcomes, Drexel University, A.J. Drexel Autism Institute (AJDAI), Philadelphia, PA

Posted: Thursday, October 23, 2014

The A.J. Drexel Autism Institute (AJDAI) seeks applications for a tenure-track assistant professor position. This position has a primary appointment in the research program on Life Course Outcomes, led by Dr. Paul T. Shattuck.

The person hired will be expected to develop and engage in collaborative and independent research with a major, but not necessarily exclusive, emphasis on autism. Financial resources (startup funding and salary support), mentorship, and other resources are available to help attain this objective.

The Life Course Outcomes program is pursuing population- and community-level research that empowers people and organizations to improve the quality of life for people on the autism spectrum and their families by informing and assessing programs, policies and systems of care. We are researching what strategies, beyond clinical interventions, have potential to promote positive outcomes and prevent negative ones - both for people on the autism spectrum and the families and communities they are part of.

There are no required course teaching duties so Institute faculty can focus on research. However, faculty are expected to develop opportunities for research trainees and to mentor student researchers. Faculty interested in classroom teaching can selectively participate in such activities in collaboration with other Drexel programs. Secondary appointment in another university unit (e.g., the School of Public Health) is encouraged but not required.

Qualifications:

We seek applicants with a PhD, or equivalent degree, and research training in one or more of the following (or related) academic fields: public health, public policy, economics, sociology, demography, social work, psychology, education, political science. Prior research experience and/or advanced training in autism is highly desirable. Postdoctoral training is desirable but not necessary.

Essential Functions:

  • Support the collaborative interdisciplinary environment of the Autism Institute.
  • Develop a productive research program eventually leading to extramural funding.
  • Develop collaborative partnerships with community, scientific, and Drexel University stakeholders.
  • Actively mentor graduate students and postgraduate trainees.
  • Support the operation of the Institute and University through service.
  • Engage in service supporting the autism research field and their academic or professional discipline.
  • Participate in other academic and professional service activities.

Supplemental Posting Information:
Documents that must be associated with this posting: Cover letter, statement of research achievements and aims, current curriculum vitae, three recent writing samples, and contact information for three references. Drexel University is an Equal Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer. Drexel University is especially interested in qualified candidates who can contribute to the diversity and excellence of our academic community.
