For a Postdoctoral Psychologist working 0.6 to 1.0 FTE

Degree and area of specialization:

A doctoral degree in Clinical, School, or Counseling Psychology is required.  Strong emphasis in training on serving individuals with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD).

Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:

Graduate-level coursework and clinical experience focused on children and/or adults with developmental disabilities and their families are required, including assessment experience in the areas of cognitive functioning, autism spectrum disorders, and socio-emotional and behavioral problems. 

A minimum of 2 years of graduate-level experience with clients with developmental disabilities and their families is required. 

Principal duties:

The Waisman Center is dedicated to the advancement of knowledge about human development, developmental disabilities, and neurodegenerative diseases.  One of only 15 centers of its kind in the United States, the Waisman Center encompasses laboratories for biomedical and behavioral research, a brain imaging center, and a clinical bio-manufacturing facility.  In addition to its research efforts, the Center provides an array of services to people with developmental disabilities, offers numerous early intervention, educational, and outreach programs to young children and their families, and trains scientists and clinicians who will serve our nation in the future.

The primary purpose of this position is twofold: the postdoctoral psychologist 1) will receive advanced training and supervision in assessment and intervention for people with developmental disabilities and their families and 2) will contribute as a team member in providing supervised clinical psychology services delivered at the Waisman Center. The postdoctoral psychologist will participate in interdisciplinary assessments and intervention for children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities (especially autism spectrum disorders). The postdoctoral psychologist will receive at least one hour per week of individual supervision from a qualified supervisor. The position includes opportunities to participate in ongoing formal training concerning the provision of multidisciplinary, family-centered care to individuals with developmental disabilities and their families through the Wisconsin Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (WI-LEND) program.  The postdoctoral psychologist may also participate in clinical research.

Principal Duties:

 1)  Direct Clinical Services (75%)

- Conduct supervised developmental and cognitive assessments with children, adolescents, and adults with developmental disabilities using the following standardized instruments, among others:  Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule (ADOS), DSM-IV Symptom Checklist, Mullen Scales of Early Learning, Stanford-Binet, DAS, Wechsler scales, Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales II, Child Behavior Checklist. Research reliability on the ADOS is highly desired but not essential.

- Complete documentation and write reports related to all clinical and supervision activities including electronic medical records, interdisciplinary reports, and annual data collection.

-Contribute to activities relevant to clinical services including care coordination, triage of referrals, contacts with school program planners, behavioral therapists, mental health programs, family meetings, and IEP attendance.

- Design and implement intervention protocols to address behavioral issues, social skills, and other functional issues for children with developmental disabilities.

- Provide consultation and technical assistance to families and community service providers based on the results of comprehensive evaluations.

2)  Clinical training and supervision (15%) 

- Participate as the supervisee in individual supervision on a weekly basis from a qualified psychology supervisor.  Engage in advanced formal training specific to provision of care for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. 

3)  Research (5%) 

- Collaborate on data collection for research involving diagnostic and intervention services for individuals with developmental disabilities, with a focus on autism spectrum disorders.

4)  Other duties to support core functions of University Center for Excellence in Developmental
     Disabilities (UCEDD) (5%)

- Assist in the preparation of grant and contract applications.

- Foster coordinated planning and programming with others in the Waisman Center UCEDD and Intellectual & Developmental Disabilities Research Center (IDDRC).

- Explore opportunities to become involved with Center-based research initiatives and become involved as opportunities are made available, time and resources permit.
