The incumbent of this position serves as a Medical Officer with responsibility for providing scientific leadership and guidance in the planning, development, implementation and evaluation of assigned biomedical research programs in the IDDB, Division of Extramural Research, NICHD. The Branch develops, stimulates and supports research and research training programs in intellectual and developmental disabilities, including common and rare neuromuscular and neurodevelopmental disorders, such as Down, Fragile X, and Rett syndromes, inborn errors of metabolism, autism spectrum disorders, newborn screening conditions, and others. The IDDB supports research on the etiology and pathophysiology of abnormal nervous system development and the metabolic, genetic, genomic, and epigenomic bases of intellectual disabilities, and members of the Branch collaborate with other federal agencies, organizations, and advocacy groups to advance efforts toward the prevention and diagnosis of intellectual disabilities as well as early intervention and treatment for these conditions. The Branch is promoting the development of therapeutics for intellectual and developmental disabilities, including pilot clinical studies and clinical trials. The incumbent has broad responsibility for developing and managing programs that address the above areas of scientific focus relevant to the mission of IDDB. Outstanding candidates for this position will have been trained in pediatrics, neurology, psychiatry, or internal medicine with subspecialty training in developmental pediatrics, genetics, or child and adolescent psychiatry.
