The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center for Research on Human Development (VKC) is accepting applications for the Associate Director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center Reading Clinic. The mission of the VKC (http://kc.vanderbilt.edu) is to facilitate discoveries and best practices that make positive differences in the lives of people with developmental disabilities and their families. The VKC provides an exceptional research, training and service environment, reflecting synergy across our NICHD-supported Intellectual and Developmental Disability Research Center (IDDRC), MCHB-supported Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) grant and AIDD supported-University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD).

The VKC Reading Clinic provides intensive, one-to-one instruction for children in kindergarten through eighth grade who are experiencing reading problems. Clinic tutors use reading instructional methods that have been proven to help children acquire reading skills. Instructional methods stress the connections between letters and sounds, how sounds fit together to form words, the development of fluent reading performance, and the achievement of strong comprehension of material read. The Clinic currently has three clinic sessions each year. The goals of the Reading Clinic include providing direct instruction to children in the community using research-based methods; training preservice teachers in best practices in teaching reading; and training in-service teachers in best practices in teaching reading.

We are seeking an enthusiastic self-starter and collaborative leader to help shape the future of the Reading Clinic, now in its tenth year of operation. This position reports to the Faculty Director of the Reading Clinic (Laurie Cutting, Ph.D. - http://kc.vanderbilt.edu/educationandbrainlab/) and the Co-Director of the VKC UCEDD. This position is the lead position that oversees the planning and implementation of the Reading Clinic research, training and service. Responsibilities include supervising students and other tutors in clinic, leading trainings, conducting scholarly and community activities.

Qualified applicants will possess: a minimum of a PhD or other doctoral degree in a field relevant to developmental disabilities and reading; three to five years of experience and in-depth knowledge in the area of developmental disabilities and program development; and, management skills including fiscal management, and human resource management. Opportunities for research are available both in and outside the Reading Clinic as well, and such interest would be enthusiastically received; if the applicant has interest in research, experience in or potential for securing extramural funds would be desirable, along with a statement about potential research areas of interest. Depending on the discipline and qualifications of the candidate, the Associate Director position would also include a faculty appointment.

Applications should include: a current curriculum vitae, a letter describing training, clinical and service interests and experience, one letter of reference, and the contact information for at least two additional references who may be contacted if needed. Review of applications will begin immediately and continue until the position is filled. Vanderbilt University is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer with a strong institutional commitment to diversity in all areas.
