Columbia College Chicago is an urban institution of over 10,000 undergraduate and graduate students emphasizing arts, media, and communications in a liberal arts setting. The Department of Services for Students with Disabilities is seeking applications for an Assistant Director.

Job Summary:  Under the supervision of the Assistant Dean of Student Health and Support, the Assistant Director of Services for Students with Disabilities will be responsible for providing and directing support services to students with disabilities.  The Assistant Director will oversee the accommodation process for students with disabilities, as well as educate faculty about reasonable accommodations.  Work involves supervisory responsibilities and frequent decision-making and judgment is needed on a frequent basis to apply policies and procedures.  There is frequent contact with students from diverse backgrounds dealing with sensitive or personal matters and contact with external agencies such as social services and health care agencies.  Errors may result in continuing conflict, ill will, or law suits.

Duties & Responsibilities:  Supervise the Coordinator of Interpreting Services and the Coordinator of Services for Students with Disabilities; provide students with accommodation letters, and a variety of support resources on and off campus; inform faculty and students of responsibilities in accordance with Section 504 and ADA; review medical, psychological, neurological, and educational documentation by a licensed professional and determine accommodations based on these documents; provide the faculty with information related to disability issues including but not limited to evaluations, testing, on-campus resources, and off-campus agency support; discuss accommodations and student's need with faculty; serve as a liaison between students and faculty on disability issues; serve as intake person for student disability grievances; recommend appropriate adaptive equipment/technology to appropriate Columbia departments; consult with external agencies for the enhancement of Services for Students with Disabilities; serve on Student Affairs committees as requested/needed; perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:  Experience, Education, and Training: Master's degree in a disability services, education, psychology, or social work-related field, and at least 5 years' experience coordinating accommodations for students with disabilities required; extensive knowledge of Section 504 and ADA essential. Skills and Abilities: Ability to work with diverse populations; experience working with students with disabilities; good interpersonal and problem solving skills; excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to develop and organize support groups and informational sessions/workshops.
