Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Arkansas

Nutrition is for Everyone (NIFE) in Arkansas (AR) hosted their second large-scale train-the-trainers course in Jonesboro. During this course, NIFE AR educated disability facility employees on how to host and teach a 6-week adapted Cooking Matters class series. Each employee plans to begin offering a class in the new year, this will reach over 30 disability facilities in the North-East portion of the state.

Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Louisiana

The Nutrition is for Everyone Louisiana ( NIFE LA) welcomes Jenry Schorling, LDN, RD, as a Deputy Nutrition Ambassador. Jenry will help with the development of accurate and appropriate nutrition education materials disseminated through the project. She will also consult with the NIFE LA team on nutrition education curriculum being developed in partnership with Special Olympics Louisiana which is piloting an 8-week nutrition and physical activity curriculum starting later this month.

Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Mississippi

Nutrition is for Everyone Mississippi (NIFE MS) has scheduled its first recruitment event and nutrition training for January, where the first events will be held in Hattiesburg. The recruitment event will be held in mid-January where interested local participants can stop by to receive information. Individuals with disabilities and their family members can sample trail mix snacks and take home the recipe, watch a demo video of the preparation, and sign up for upcoming trainings.

Nutrition is for Everyone Ambassador Updates - Oklahoma

The Nutrition Ambassador for Nutrition is for Everyone Oklahoma (NIFE OK) attended the annual Oklahoma Autism Conference and provided resources to participants. Over 200 people attended and were provided with healthy recipes and ideas for incorporating healthy foods for children with texture aversions. This deputy ambassadors will be providing training on the Healthy Living module at an upcoming Oklahoma Self-Advocacy Network (OKSAN) retreat and will also be teaching a cooking class in Shawnee, OK for people with disabilities and their families and friends.

Healthy eating over the holiday is always a challenge, so with help from the students, the Nutrition Ambassador from Nutrition is for Everyone Tennessee (NIFE TN) put together a guide, "Easy Holiday Gifts from the Kitchen", with instructions for fruit and vegetable related treats and meals.

Disability Rights and Sexual Health

Sexual and reproductive health are important parts of overall health; however, people with disabilities are not always given the resources they need to achieve it. For many, this topic is addressed in schools, at home, in doctors' offices, or in the care of other human service professionals. Are people with disabilities asked about their sexual needs, or does society assume that they cannot or do not have sex?

Former Trainee: Dianey Leal, Bush School of Government an Public Service (TX UCEDD)

Dianey Leal served as a 2016 Diversity Fellow with the Center of Disability and Development at Texas A&M University, where she researched policies on disability-related issues. Dianey graduated from St. Edward's University in 2015 with a double major in political science and English writing and rhetoric. She graduated from The Bush School of Government and Public Service in May with an M.A. in Public Service and Administration. During the summer, she worked as a program aide compiling data for the Bush School's annual diversity accountability report, and also helped Dr. Frank Ashley create a syllabus for his course on Diversity in the Workplace.

MCDD's (MD UCEDD) Associate Director Joins a National Advisory Committee for COPAA

Maureen van Stone, the associate director of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities at Kennedy Krieger Institute was selected to be on a national advisory committee for the Council of Parent Attorneys and Advocates, Inc. (COPAA). COPAA was awarded a grant from the National Council on Disability (NCD) to write a Report on Charter Schools, Choice, & Vouchers - Implications for Students with Disabilities. COPAA has partnered with Center for Law and Education (CLE) to do the research, focus groups and drafting. COPAA invited a cross section of stakeholders, including Ms. van Stone, to participate on the national advisory panel.

Mallory Finn, a staff attorney for Project HEAL (Health, Education, Advocacy, and Law) at Kennedy Krieger Institute, received the 2017 Leading Women award from The Daily Record. Revised Transportation Voucher Toolkit available FREE (MT UCEDD)

Transportation, especially in rural areas, continues to be one of the main issues that people with disabilities deal with on a daily basis. To help address this barrier to community participation, RTC:Rural and the Association of Programs for Rural Independent Living (APRIL) developed the Rural Transportation Voucher Program. This Toolkit was recently updated and can now be downloaded for free from the APRIL and RTC websites

Rose F. Kennedy UCEDD Supports First Bronx Special Olympics Polar Plunge

The day was cold but spirits were high as the Rose F Kennedy UCEDD staff joined in the First Special Olympics Polar Plunge on Sunday, November 19, 2017 at the Bronx Zoo. The event raised over $17,000. in funds to support Special Olympic Athletes in their quest for the "Gold"!
