The Mailman Center for Child Development (MCCD) at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine has provided interdisciplinary leadership training in neurodevelopmental disabilities to thousands of trainees over the last 40 years. We have created a new initiative to enhance our leadership training programs called The Emerging Transformational Leadership Program (ETLP) for early to mid-level career professionals. It is designed to help individuals reach their potential as individual leaders who transform systems of care for people with developmental disabilities. This training program will build critical leadership skills, prepare individuals for the challenges of their own life-long leadership journeys, and develop awareness for the rich opportunities for leadership in South Florida and beyond. The year-long curriculum engages a small group of select individuals in experiential learning in the community, practical skills building activities, and dynamic interactions with established and emerging community leaders. A group project encourages participants to learn to harness the full potential of individuals and groups in our community, to foster relationships that bridge diversity on many levels, and to create innovative, sustaining solutions to the complex issues that face the disability community in South Florida. The goal of the group project is to develop a specific plan to improve community-based systems of care for children with neurodevelopmental disabilities.

We selected our first class called "Fellows" by a nomination process from an advisory board of respected South Florida leaders. ETLP's first cohort of "Fellows" launched in September 2011 and consisted of four outstanding individuals who reflected the diverse professions we were hoping for, such as; a parent, social worker and LEND trainee, epidemiologist and educator. The 9 month curriculum is divided into disability, public policy and leadership material and will culminate with a group capstone project that identified a gap or need in the developmental disability community. We have collaborated with Catalyst Miami, a community based organization and experts in leadership development, to teach the leadership content and our faculty and advisory board also teach components of the curriculum. ETLP fills a gap and is a unique leadership program for professionals who work specifically with the disability population.

Our "ETLP Mailman Fellows" are motivated to improve their leadership skills and to create systems change for the underserved developmental disabilities population. We are excited to witness what they will create and contribute and how they will improve systems of care for Miami's disability community.
