Project Description
The Autism Care for Toddlers (ACT) clinic)provides comprehensive, early intervention, clinical services for economically disadvantaged and underserved toddlers (18-36 month of age) with an autism spectrum disorder. Early intervention services target social communication, language, play skills, and maladaptive behavior. In addition to services delivered directly to toddlers, parents are trained to promote and train skills in the home setting. Service delivery personnel consist of graduate and undergraduate students who are majoring in professions (i.e., psychology, speech and language therapy, occupational and physical therapy, and nursing) that serve children with autism spectrum disorders and other developmental disabilities. Service delivery personnel are trained by licensed and/or board certified professionals and are involved in delivery of the intervention services to the toddlers. The program is located at the Autism Center of Nebraska in Omaha. The project began in August of 2013 and will hopefully be a continual program. The expected outcomes are improved access to early intervention services for underserved toddlers with autism spectrum disorders, increased opportunities for training students in the field of developmental disabilities and autism spectrum disorders, and increased number of professionals to deliver evidenced based care in a growing population of children with developmental disabilities. The grant funds will cover salaries, equipment and rental fees. The collaborating organizations assisting with this project are the Autism Center of Nebraska, Munroe Meyer Institute Leadership and Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities program, and Department of Psychology at the Munroe Meyer Institute.
