Achieving Leadership Through Problem-based Learning

Briefly describe the activity and its purpose.

In order to make the LEND program more family-centered and trainee-driven, the Arkansas Regional LEND adopted problem-based learning as the foundational pedagogical strategy.  Families meet with the trainees and faculty for an interview that covers a wide range of topics, including diagnoses, interventions, family supports, school issues, funding needs, future plans and aspirations, service needs, recreation and socialization, and impact of the disability on the family.

From issues identified in the interview, each trainee chooses a learning issue, investigates the issue, and teaches their small group about that issue. At the conclusion of the process, the class presents their information and recommendations to the family.

Briefly describe the positive impacts this activity has had on trainees.

Trainees and faculty members both report increased engagement in learning using problem-based learning.
