This webinar-- sponsored by the Autism Intervention Research Network on Physical Health (AIR-P) -- will focus on: The intersection of race and ASD. The webinar will include a presentation by Dr. Sophie Molholm on the findings from a multisite study on autism in African Americans focused on increasing diversity in genetics studies and understanding reasons for later age of diagnosis in this group as well as a collaborative discussion led by Dr. Lisa Shulman, a clinical leader of a large, diverse inner-city Developmental Center in concert with a parent of children with ASD and an Autistic Adult on practical strategies for supporting a diverse ASD population and their families in accessing diagnosis, therapeutic and medical services, and encouraging participation in research.

Presenters 

Sophie Molholm MD, is Professor of Pediatrics, Neuroscience, and Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. She currently serves as director of the Rose F. Kennedy Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center and its related training program. Her lab uses multimodal brain imaging (e.g., high density electrophysiology), behavior, and cognitive and clinical assessments to understand how neurobiological processes are altered in individuals with neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric conditions. While much of her work is focused on autism, she also works on a number of rare genetic conditions including cystinosis, Rett Syndrome, and 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. Ultimately, she hopes that characterization of fundamental information processing differences increases understanding of these disorders, informs study stratification and approaches to treatment, and provides stable biomarkers of treatment efficacy. Dr. Molholm has had continuous funding for her research throughout her career and has over 100 publications in peer reviewed journals.

Lisa Shulman MD, is Professor of Pediatrics at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. A Developmental Pediatrician with over 30 years at Einstein/Montefiore in the Bronx, New York, Dr. Shulman serves as the Director of Autism Services at the Rose F. Kennedy Children’s Evaluation & Rehabilitation Center (RFK CERC) and the Director of its Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) program. Dr. Shulman served on the Autism Executive Committee of the National AAP Council on Children with Disabilities from 2019-2023 and as the Centers for Disease Control Act Early Ambassador to New York State from 2016-2019.  Dr. Shulman is board-certified in Pediatrics and Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics. Her clinical and research interests include: early identification of autism, overcoming healthcare disparities in autism diagnosis, and follow up of children with early diagnosis of Autism.
