Team Projects- Jefferson County Board of Education Continuing Education Event

Most health care, especially pediatrics, is team-based; therefore, teamwork is an essential skill for the trainees to learn. Trainees are expected to work together. There is a didactic education on "crucial conversations" in the beginning of the spring semester. This is purposefully done because most of the team activities take place during the spring semester. The trainees are encouraged to use their skills in conflict resolution that are presented during this class when working as a team. Each project gets a multi-modal evaluation. The trainees evaluate each other; there is an evaluation of the product and an evaluation by an outside source(s).

The team projects address the following MCH Leadership Competencies: Ethics and Professionalism, Critical Thinking, Communication, Negotiation, and Conflict Resolution, Cultural Competency, Developing Others Through Teaching and Mentoring, Interdisciplinary Team Building, Working with Communities and Systems, and Policy and Advocacy.

Jefferson County Board of Education Continuing Education ("Con Ed") Event:

This is a yearly conference that UAB PPC trainees put on for the school nurses employed by the Jefferson County Board of Education. In 2014, the "Con Ed" event was expanded to include the nurse from Birmingham City School System. The trainees perform all tasks related to conference planning. These tasks include assessing continuing education needs, securing speakers, menu planning, donations, door prizes, speaker introduction, program printing, evaluation, and budget planning.

This project is considered our trainees' group capstone and comes at the end of the academic year. They have to use all the skills they've learned not only about education and MCH content but about teamwork, communication, and negotiation /conflict resolutions. Critical thinking is also needed when learning to deal with last-minute crises.

The school nurses in our state are terribly underserved and receive very few quality continuing education credits. The "Con Ed" event is free for them. The event always gets rave reviews, and we manage to incorporate MCH content. For instance, in 2014, we had a parent speak and we also had a speaker on sleep hygiene.
