AUCD - Poster Symposium 4B - Diagnostic, Clinical Service Issues & Disability Studies

Session Description

All posters for the AUCD Conference will be presented throughout Monday and Tuesday in a series of poster symposia that run at the same time as concurrent sessions. During these 75-minute poster symposia, 10-14 posters on a similar theme will be grouped together in a room. Posters will be displayed on large boards and have a table underneath for accompanying materials. The session will be introduced by a moderator followed by brief introductions by presenters. Attendees will then be free to move around the room and connect with individual presenters for the remainder of the session. Attendees are welcome to move between symposia rooms and view posters on other topics. Conference posters will be available to view on the website and in the mobile app.

Embedding Disability in Diversity Competencies for Undergraduates in an Interdisciplinary Introductory Disability Studies Course

In this poster we describe how we used a university's diversity competencies framework to engage undergraduates in thinking critically about disability as an aspect of human diversity. We share information about course context, the diversity competency concepts, and sample activities. We discuss findings from analyses of students' responses across multiple assignments and conclude with reflections on how to further support student understanding and action.

Identifying Disparities to care during Covid 19 among families with children who have developmental disabilities

Changes in health care services during the COVID-19 pandemic created disruption and barriers to care for some families, especially for families with children with developmental disabilities. Children with developmental disabilities are 2 to 4 times more likely to have unmet health needs compared to children without developmental disabilities This study will examine the following research question(s): How has COVID-19 impacted the overall quality of life and barriers to care for children with developmental disabilities

Differences in Co-Occurring Conditions in School-Age Children and Adolescents with Autism

Individuals with autism often present with another medical or psychiatric condition and it is important to identify, diagnose and treat co-occurring conditions, as they may affect the individuals' presentation and their response to specific treatments. We reviewed all school-age children and adolescents diagnosed with autism from 1/2018 to 1/2022 in an urban university-affiliated UCEDD/LEND multidisciplinary center noting that 94% presented one or more co-occurring conditions

Exploring the Perspectives of Biological Parents Involved in the Child Welfare System during the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the needs of underserved populations, including those involved with the child welfare system. This trainee-involved project focused on giving voice to biological parents who had foster care involvement, by interviewing parents regarding their experiences during the Covid-19 pandemic. Themes that emerged included challenges with visitation, services, and technology access, as well as fear and distrust of the child welfare system.


"Forensic Analysis" Thinking: Promoting Equity of Access for All Persons

While forensic analysis often conjures images of criminal justice investigation, it is actually a valuable and innovative analytic process to identify "what went wrong" as the empirical basis to inform creative repair and advancement. This poster presents an innovative forensic educational process and its evaluation in a disability studies curriculum which engages students in analyzing and advancing responses to unequal access in all arenas of health and welfare.

Racial Disparities in Access to Medications for Opioid Use Disorder During Pregnancy

This presentation will discuss findings from a meta-analysis examining the relationship between maternal race and access to medications for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment during pregnancy. Results from this study indicate lesser odds of black pregnant people receiving MOUD during pregnancy as compared to non-Hispanic White pregnant people. These results reveal a critical issue in health equity and access to intervention for substance use disorder during pregnancy.

Crossing Mountains for Access: Merging Telehealth and In-Person Services for a Child with ASD in Rural West Virginia

We will describe how we facilitate access to important services for a three-year-old newly diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder who lives in an extremely rural area without critical interventions. Using a monthly in-person multidisciplinary "bootcamp" model and weekly telehealth parent training, we successfully provide evidence-based treatments for the child, mental health care for parents, and medical services for family members. We will invite interactive discussion from audience members.


Words Matter: The Impact of Parental Language During Mealtimes

Feeding problems are common in children, affecting 70-89% of children with developmental disabilities. We examined the impact of parental language during mealtimes on the child's willingness to participate in and explore foods during a feeding intervention program. Teaching parents how to carefully choose words during mealtimes is crucial in helping to create a positive atmosphere and plays a significant role in feeding therapy.

Screening for Developmental Delay in Children with Sensorineural Hearing Loss Who are Receiving Cochlear Implants

The aim of this project was to enhance the screening process for children with moderately-severe to profound hearing loss. Children at a Cochlear Implant Clinic were screened for delays using the Ages and Stages Questionnaire and the Sensory Profile-2. The new screening process gave providers tools needed to assess the whole child leading to timely referrals to developmental services which could improve overall outcomes for children with hearing loss.

Visual Sensory Experiences as Described by Autistic Authors: A Thematic Analysis of Quotes from Autobiographies II

Unusual visual sensory behaviors are common in individuals with autism. In Phase II of the study reported in 2021, we read four additional autobiographical books by autistic authors, identified quotes describing visual reactions, divided them into "Seek" and "Avoid," and conducted thematic analyses of the descriptions. We found several common themes in types of visual experiences were either sought or avoided. and for what it felt like.

Developing disability competency in public health education: UConn UCEDD's graduate Certificate

Including disability content in public health education programs is lacking even though persons with disabilities are part of all communities. This graduate Certificate addresses this need and aligns with public health education competencies and disability competencies. Framed by the 10 Essential Public Health Services, the Certificate prepares students to include people with disabilities in their future work. Details of alignments and applications of the competencies will be addressed.
