This workshop will focus on the unique needs of persons with complex communication styles and the criminal justice system. To ensure the voices of all victims and defendants are heard and accurately understood within the criminal justice system, several models for enhanced communication will be discussed. V.O.I.C.E., Validating Others Intentional Communicative Expression protocol will also be introduced.

This presentation will discuss the efforts of University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) on including self-advocate and youth voices within each center. This panel will consist of representatives of four UCEDDs, each of these UCEDDs received funding for a Project of National Significance that focuses on youth leadership and empowerment. Projects exploring sustainability options will be discussed. Each UCEDD representative will briefly review his/her respective projects.

Family support is an important element to supporting individuals with developmental disabilities and their families, especially as budgets tighten, individuals with disabilities are living longer and as support systems are balancing self-determination and the reliance on families to provide support. Past and current approaches will be reveiwed, followed by a discussion about the future of family support and possible implications for the DD Act.

The Medicaid Reference Desk and MyPlan: Supporting self-advocacy by assisting people with disabilities, including intellectual disabilities, in managing Medicaid-related services

We will demonstrate the Medicaid Reference Desk, a website accessible across many disabilities, including intellectual disability. The MyPlan section and recent improvements to the entire site will be emphasized. MyPlan is a person-centered planning tool developed for and by people with disabilities that has proven useful for many purposes.

A brief orientation to the SpecialQuest materials and approach for planning and implementing effective training and professional development on inclusion will be shared, including viewing a video segment. Each UCEDD will share their experiences with SpecialQuest Birth-Five and plans for the future.
