2020 START National Training Institute

The training spans two and a half days and features keynote addresses, panel discussions, breakout sessions from four content-focused strands, a judged research poster session & professional networking event, the START Film premiere, and a Sunday evening coffee house.

National Disability Voter Registration Week
In 2020, over 35 million eligible voters will be people with disabilities, according to Rutgers University. That figure jumps to over 62 million eligible voters when you add in family members in the same household. Millions of others are connected to disability in work and community. AUCD is excited to join partners across the disability community working to increase the political power of people with disabilities by sharing resources and getting folks registered to vote. This National Disability Voter Registration Week is part of our plans to continuously share information and resources up to Election Day 2020.

Curriculum Design Assistance for AUCD Network Members: The Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDD) Core Curriculum Resources
Join us for a discussion about the Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (NDD) Core Curriculum Resources! Originally developed to support LEND curriculum development at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, the Resources are moving to AUCD in Summer of 2020 in part to extend their reach across the AUCD network and will be relevant for (and available to) all network members engaged in pre-service training activities.

Using Innovative and Alternative Approaches to De-Escalating Individuals in Crisis Situations
A mobile mental health clinic will discuss strategies for working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities and disadvantaged and underserved populations who are experiencing a crisis situation. The webinar will focus on alternatives to police involvement, promoting client-centered communications, scene safety, de-escalation strategies, rapport building, and the role of self in crisis intervention.

Prepared4ALL Town Hall
This informal virtual meeting will give interested disability organizations an opportunity to meet the team and learn about the toolkit created to assist with local emergency preparedness outreach efforts. This will become an optional monthly meeting with which organizations can choose to join in order to receive support from AUCD's Technical Assistance and Training Center, learn about new resources, and collaboratively problem-solve with others when making inroads with local emergency preparedness efforts.

Virtual Release of the Annual Disability Statistics Compendium

During this webinar series, experts will present three web-based tools (Compendium, Supplement, and State Report) that make finding and using disability statistics easier for individuals working on legislative and other matters relating to persons with disabilities. In addition, we will highlight two special topics: implications of COVID-19 for people with disabilities, and disability and African Americans.

AIR-P Presents: COVID-19 Vaccine, I/DD Populations, and the Needle Anxiety Program at UCLA
Immunizations are crucial to protect all people from vaccine-preventable illnesses. Some studies suggest that autistic individuals have lower rates of immunizations, for reasons that are not entirely clear. Multiple organizations have called for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to be prioritized in COVID-19 vaccination distribution. Vaccine hesitancy and needle phobia are two likely contributors towards lower vaccination rates. One of the initial intervention projects from the AIR-P focuses on reducing needle anxiety and improving immunization rates among autistic individuals. This intervention was developed as a pilot to address needle anxiety in conjunction with Pfizer and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for use in an Improving Pediatric Immunization Care collaborative but has not been widely implemented. The AIR-P network provides an opportunity to implement this needle anxiety intervention in multiple sites. Measures of success for this intervention would include vaccination rates among autistic individuals and satisfaction with the vaccine administration process.

The webinar will feature updates from the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD)'s Prepared4ALL initiative of the National Center on Disability Inclusion and Emergency Preparedness, along with strategies for connecting with state and local public health officials in the COVID-19 response and beyond. Partners from the Association of State and Territorial Health Officials (ASTHO) and the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) will share updates on disability inclusion efforts, including regional and local approaches.

AIR-P Presents: Using Autism Research to Inform Policy: Successes, Lessons, and Challenges
This webinar presents results and lessons learned from nearly a decade of autism research aimed at informing policy to improve the lives of youth and adults on the autism spectrum. We will discuss how the work of the Life Course Outcomes Research Program and the Policy and Analytics Center at the A.J. Drexel Autism Institute have informed policy at the local, state, national and international levels. We will also outline the process and considerations necessary for creating effective information dissemination environments and partnerships, provide examples of useful tools for designing for dissemination, and guide a discussion of continued challenges.

Introduction to Data Visualization and Infographic Development
This interactive workshop introduces data visualization, including a step-by-step process and tips to creating an accessible infographic. Participants will gain basic skills and understand the utility of infographics to make data more accessible. Participants are encouraged to bring infographics to contribute to discussion. After the presentation, participants should be able to apply their knowledge by synthesizing data into a simple narrative and design their own infographic.

This session will explore practical strategies for working directly with people who have disabilities to develop the skills and experience needed for decision-making. The presenters will also address and explore the practical, legal and policy issues that may need to be navigated for SDM to work well as a support for many people with disabilities.
