2:00pm - 5:00pm
Location: Hyatt Regency Hotel (Denver, CO), Mineral F/G

This workshop introduced trainees to the various challenges associated with assessing, monitoring, and effectively serving deaf / hard of hearing children who have additional disabilities from a systems perspective. It was a unique, interactive learning opportunity that brings together trainees and faculty from across the country. The focus of the workshop was on intersectionality of culture and diversity.

Who Should Attend?

This workshop was intended for LEND Pediatric Audiology trainees who were attending the 2018 Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting. LEND Audiology faculty (and any additional program faculty) are encouraged to register and will be expected to facilitate small group discussions and activities.

Learning Objectives

  1. Allow trainees to network with peers from around the country, unpack common experiences, and learn from each other.
  2. Encourage trainees to actively consider the many aspects of culture in their clinical, research, and advocacy pursuits.
  3. Expose trainees to practical strategies for establishing and maintaining effective family partnerships.
  4. Provide an opportunity for trainees to understand how culture and diversity can affect different parts of the EHDI system.

Confirmed Guest Participants

We had an intentionally diverse panel of family leaders who briefly introduced themselves, responded to a set of pre-determined questions from the moderator, and took additional questions from trainees. Panelists information are located on the right side to download.

Location

The workshop took place from 2:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday, March 18, at the Hyatt Regency Denver in Denver, CO, site of the EHDI annual meeting.

Materials

Before the workshop, trainees were expected to, read three articles related to the topics of deaf and hard of hearing, and intersectionality of culture and diversity. There were two supplementary resources if trainees wanted to continue their exploration.

Articles:

  1. When Deafness is Medicalized (2017)
  2. What is intersectionality, and what does it have to do with me? (2017)
  3. Defining Cultural Competence: A Practical Framework for Addressing Racial/Ethnic Disparities in Health and Health Care (see attached in top right)
Supplemental resources:
  1. CLAS standards
  2. EIEC Checklist (see attached)

After reading the three articles, trainees wrote about an awkward or challenging interaction that they had with a family in which cultural differences might have been a factor. They responded to the following questions:

  1. What specifically made it awkward or challenging?
  2. Did you have a sense for what the family might have been experiencing?
  3. Was there information in either or both articles that prompted you to think more critically about this interaction?
At the beginning of the workshop, trainees from different programs were intentionally grouped together; they shared and compared their thoughts and reactions to the homework assignment. After the panel, the trainees regrouped and discussed how diversity, and cultural linguistic competence could affect other components of the EHDI system. Notes from both small group discussions are located on the right.
