2011 National Conference on Volunteering and Service

Join internationally known autism experts and physician researchers for a state of the science review of autism and environment. Dr. Martha Herbert, M.D.,Ph.D. of Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School and Dr. Claudia Miller, M.D., M.S. of the University of Texas Health Sciences Center at San Antonio will review the dramatic rise in autism, the role of environment in autism, the whole body aspects of autism and the implications of toxic exposures in immune function and autism. Dentistry and Individuals with Special Health Care Needs

This presentation provided an overview of dental care for individuals with special health care needs (pediatric to adult). The presentation included information about unique aspects of providing dental care to individuals with special health care needs, barriers to access to care, the dental home model, as well as a presentation on dental training resources/modules. This presentation included an overview of the National Maternal and Child Oral Health Resource Center.

Scaling-Up Self-Determination: Tools from the National Gateway to Self-Determination (NGSD)

This webinar presented the tools, resources, activities and publications developed by the National Gateway to Self-Determination (NGSD). The overall goal of NGSD is to establish a sustainable, evidence-based training system that enhances self-determination training programs that lead to quality of life outcomes for individuals with developmental disabilities throughout the lifespan.

Addressing Diversity and Disability: A Discussion of Improving Systems-Level Cultural Competency for National Service Programs

As the diversity of participants in national service programs grows both locally and nationally, what practices are you using to engage historically underrepresented groups? When conducting outreach and recruitment to these populations, how do you approach including people with disabilities from diverse groups? In order to discuss these questions, The National Service Inclusion Project (NSIP) will host Dr. Nicholas Montalto and Dr. Rooshey Hasnain, authors of "Systems Change for Greater Cultural Competence in the Pennsylvania Disability Service and Support Sector," in a one and a half hour webinar presentation on diversity and disability
