Salma Tayel
Public Health Intern
Salma Tayel is joining the AUCD team for the summer of 2018 as a Public Health Intern. Salma is currently majoring in Public Health Studies and minoring in Bioethics at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, MD. Her current research interests include maternal and child health, reducing health disparities in order to maximize population health and reducing disparities within communities with disabled peoples. Her previous research experiences range from following up with kidney transplant patients to studying the impact of school based health centers in low income neighborhoods.
Salma's passion for public health stems from her direct experiences with patients in her time in various clinics and operating rooms. Having seen the impact of many public health issues such as physician-patient interactions, lack of health insurance, and cultural gaps between patients and providers, she hopes to pursue a Master's in Public Health before applying to medical school to be a pediatrician. She believes that the direct implementation of public health initiatives as a healthcare provider is a crucial step in increasing healthy populations and reducing health disparities.
She is looking forward to expanding her interests by being a part of the public health team at AUCD.
