This webinar will provide an overview of LTSAE, the purpose and scope of the Act Early Response to COVID-19 and include a high-level overview of findings from the Act Early/COVID-19 Response Team needs assessment process.

AIR-P Presents: COVID-19 Vaccine, I/DD Populations, and the Needle Anxiety Program at UCLA

Immunizations are crucial to protect all people from vaccine-preventable illnesses. Some studies suggest that autistic individuals have lower rates of immunizations, for reasons that are not entirely clear. Multiple organizations have called for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities to be prioritized in COVID-19 vaccination distribution. Vaccine hesitancy and needle phobia are two likely contributors towards lower vaccination rates. One of the initial intervention projects from the AIR-P focuses on reducing needle anxiety and improving immunization rates among autistic individuals. This intervention was developed as a pilot to address needle anxiety in conjunction with Pfizer and the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) for use in an Improving Pediatric Immunization Care collaborative but has not been widely implemented. The AIR-P network provides an opportunity to implement this needle anxiety intervention in multiple sites. Measures of success for this intervention would include vaccination rates among autistic individuals and satisfaction with the vaccine administration process.

Traditionally, professionals have been trained in a single discipline usually corresponds to an area of development Additionally, most disciplines are trained to be able to offer services and intervene across a broad age range: the lifespan of an individual. Upon completion of a program of study in a discipline, an individual is then licensed in a discipline to provide services to persons across the lifespan. These training and licensing practices create two challenges to providing effective early childhood intervention to infants and young children and their families: 1) interventions may be focused to specific areas of development by discipline specific interventionists (e.g. an occupational therapist provides specific motor intervention and does not incorporate any other areas of development into her therapy/intervention); and 2) interventions may be provided by a person who does not have any specific experience or competence in infancy or early childhood

Daisy Christensen, Epidemiologist at NCBDDD at CDC, will present on the recent "Prevalence of Autism Spectrum Disorder Among Children Aged 8 Years - Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, 11 Sites, United States, 2014" data release. The latest findings from the ADDM Network provide evidence that the prevalence of ASD is higher than previously reported estimates and continues to vary among certain racial/ethnic groups and communities. With prevalence of ASD ranging from 13.1 to 29.3 per 1,000 children aged 8 years in different communities throughout the United States, the need for behavioral, educational, residential, and occupational services remains high, as does the need for increased research on both genetic and nongenetic risk factors for ASD. Children from minority and low-income populations receive referral, diagnosis and treatment later and less often, and report having less information about how to obtain care, more problems obtaining care, and fewer support services to connect them to care. This webinar will provide an overview of the Screening and Linkage to Services for Autism (SaLSA) study, which aims to evaluate an autism patient navigator program for low income families with young children who screen positive for ASD. Behavioral interventions have been critical for improving the lives of individuals with autism spectrum disorder. Notable achievements include the improved numbers of children with optimal outcomes, and the larger number of children accessing the regular curriculum. Despite these gains, standard behavioral methods have had the least success in social communication outcomes. We continue to find nearly half of all children entering school without fluent, socially related communication skills. This talk will focus on the core social communication impairment in children with ASD, evaluations of this core domain and recently developed, effective interventions.

Efficacy for the Early Achievements (EA) intervention for toddlers with ASD was established via a comparative randomized controlled trial (RCT). Through IES funding, this intervention was translated via an iterative process for feasible, adoptable, and sustainable implementation in public school pre-K classrooms in which children with ASD are enrolled. In this webinar, the EA intervention, the translation process, and preliminary data from a pilot RCT in public school classrooms will be described. Next steps in establishing sustainability in public early childhood education settings will be discussed.

The University of Kentucky's Human Development Institute (HDI) has created a National Center for Prenatal and Postnatal Down Syndrome Resources that oversees three programs that complement each other in providing important resources and information for new and expectant parents learning about a diagnosis of Down syndrome. These programs include the Lettercase program, Brighter Tomorrows, and Down Syndrome Pregnancy. The Center provides this clearinghouse of nationally recommended resources so that medical practitioners, expectant parents, and new parents have access to accurate, current and balanced information about Down syndrome. The activities of the Center include the dissemination of free resources to medical providers and their patients, the development of new materials, and national medical outreach through presentations at medical conferences and journals.
