A Research Topic of Interest (RTOI) is a specific research area of significance identified by NCBDDD. RTOIs indicate that NCBDDD has a high degree of interest in funding projects addressing this subject matter, but not all approved projects are necessarily funded. RTOIs will develop and implement projects in public health and disabilities research concerning best practices and services for individuals with birth defects, developmental disabilities, and special health care needs.

Past RTOI projects have focused on the following areas:

  •
    • Health Communication and Education
    • Prevention of Secondary Conditions
    • Healthcare Cost Analysis
    • Quality of Life Studies
    • Developmental Factors and Outcomes
    • Health Promotion Interventions
    • Co-Morbidity Prevalence Studies

Specific disabilities, which are being researched through RTOI projects, include autism, Down syndrome, Duchenne muscular dystrophy, hearing loss, fetal alcohol syndrome, spina bifida, and Tourette syndrome.

RTOIs will be developed with the understanding that the projects funded under this cooperative agreement will involve substantial interaction between the investigator and the NCBDDD technical advisor. In addition, NCBDDD will develop RTOIs with consideration of information submitted by AUCD about AUCD network research priorities.

Each New NCBDDD RTOI Opportunity will include the following information:

  •
    • RTOI number
    • RTOI title
    • Number of anticipated years for the project
    • Potential level of funding
    • Brief description of the research project—this may include specific areas of study focus

In certain instances, AUCD network investigators may want to inquire if there is NCBDDD interest in funding research projects not proposed by a RTOI. Investigators will be able to propose investigator-initiated research topics of interest (I-RTOI) to NCBDDD.

All RTOIs and I-RTOIs will be submitted in the form of a letter of intent (LOI) to AUCD. Investigators submitting I-RTOIs will follow the same LOI guidelines proposed for the RTOIs. The I-RTOI applications will be reviewed and evaluated following the same timeline and review cycle as the RTOIs.
