Project Director

Overall Job Description:This is a senior level position at AUCD to provide leadership, guidance and creativity for the AUCD network of Centers and Programs to conduct research and education activities in the areas of disability and health in cooperation with CDC's National Center for Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities (NCBDDD). More specifically this position is to direct, manage and coordinate AUCD's efforts under a federal cooperative agreement with the CDC to strengthen the nation's capacity to carry out public health activities in the areas of birth defects (BD), developmental disabilities (DD), and health promotion for people living with disabilities. The Project Director reports directly to the executive director of AUCD and works with CDC officials, the AUCD network of centers and programs, sub-award grantees, and other partner organizations that focus on BD/DD and special health care needs. Major areas of activity include the Act Early Regional Summit Project, State Disability and Health Technical Assistance activities and the management of Research Topics of Interest and fellowship programs.

Required Competencies:

  • Working knowledge of public health issues and research methodologies related to persons with BD/DD and special health care needs
  • Familiarity with the national network of University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities and Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND) programs
  • Knowledge of epidemiological approaches to the study of health and disability
  • Ability to communicate effectively in writing and speaking
  • Familiarity with the grants making process, specifically programmatic and fiscal oversight
  • Demonstrated proficiency in using Internet to communicate and exchange information, as well as in word processing, database and spreadsheet software.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate the day-to-day activities associated with the project including overseeing the research sub-award process, review panel procedures and managing and developing educational and training opportunities.
  • Provide oversight for AUCD-NCBDDD Fellowship and assist in developing methods to recruit and support professionals to serve in public health at state and national levels.
  • Manage the Act Early Summit Project including coordination of future summits, collaboration with federal partners, provision of ongoing technical assistance to states, and administration of mini-grants.
  • Oversee State Disability and Health Technical Assistance Project activities for sixteen CDC funded State Disability and Health Programs.
  • Facilitate collaboration between CDC scientists, program personnel and AUCD sub-award and network researchers to carry out public health and disability research projects.
  • Collaborate with partners to develop and provide access to critical databases for health and disability services assessment.
  • Develop and participate in educational webinars, workshops, conferences, and other forums focusing on issues related to birth defects, developmental disabilities, and special health care needs.
  • Design and implement training activities that will promote professional development to support surveillance activities in birth defects and developmental disabilities.
  • Disseminate information on prevention of birth defects, developmental disabilities, health promotion and wellness for persons with disabilities across the life span.
  • Develop and implement evaluation plan for cooperative agreement activities.
  • Maintain contact with partner organizations and serve as liaison to NCBDDD, disability agencies and consumer organizations.
  • Provide ongoing supervision of the CDC Cooperative Agreement Team.
  • Prepare annual reports to NCBDDD, CDC.

Required Qualifications Include:

  • Completion of a graduate program, preferably a MPH program or masters graduate program in health and/or the disability field.
  • Experience in human services, project management, research and grants management.

Desired Qualifications Include:

  • Completion of a terminal degree in the social or health sciences (e.g., PhD, DrPH, MD)
  • Research, training, direct service or administrative experience in a UCEDD or LEND program
  • Completion of a UCEDD or LEND traineeship
