Communications Specialist, Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD), Silver Spring, MD

Are you a creative and dedicated Communications professional? Are you skilled in managing social media platforms and engaging marketing strategies?

If yes, the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) is seeking a Communications Specialist to support the communications and marketing activities of the organization. This individual manages social media efforts and creates digital and print collateral, ensuring a public image of AUCD and its networks across digital platforms and during in-person events.

Overview of Responsibilities

  1. Maintain and enhance AUCD’s presence on social channels such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, and YouTube. Create social media messaging and amplify social posts from the network, partners, policymakers, and advocates. Plan and promote social media campaigns and ads. Analyze and report engagement metrics and provide recommendations for improvement.
  2. Develop original content. Review and edit content for a variety of channels. Be able to spot a grammatical error and resolve it quickly.
  3. Coordinate and plan digital media. Ensure the website is up to date with the latest news and research from the network. Post news, events, and resources to the website as needed.
  4. Build brand awareness, attract traffic to www.aucd.org, and help amplify the work of the AUCD network. Review network websites and social media accounts weekly for news items that could be promoted broadly through AUCD’s website and social media.
  5. Develop and manage graphics or other multi-media for the website, events, and social media within AUCD’s branding and style guidelines.
  6. Support the planning and execution of events such as the Annual Conference and Gala, and digital fundraising objectives.
  7. Virtually attend and take notes for meetings held by the AUCD Communications Team, Community Education and Dissemination Council (CEDC) and the Communications Special Interest Group (SIG).
  8. Maintain, update as needed, and support all teams in implementing AUCD’s Language Access Plan. Identify and coordinate AUCD communications in need of translation to plain language and Spanish.
  9. Under the guidance of the Director of Public Policy and the Senior Advocacy Specialist, assist with the planning, scheduling, and production of Tuesdays with Liz YouTube web series. This includes scheduling interviews, filming and editing interviews, captioning the videos, posting to YouTube, and disseminating across digital channels (website, social media, AUCD Weekly, etc.).

Position Requirements

You will be qualified for this position if you have a Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or relevant field, along with three (3) years professional experience.

  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proficient knowledge of and experience using social media platforms to improve engagement
  • Capacity to meet deadlines and ability to be flexible and versatile
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software (Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint), Zoom, webinars, and survey tools

You will be a preferred candidate if you have the following:

  • Nonprofit experience
  • Familiarity with the national network of University Centers for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD), Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (LEND); and the Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Centers (IDDRC)
  • Knowledge of Adobe Premiere Pro, Zoom, AgoraPulse, and Canva
  • Familiarity with content management systems and email marketing
  • Experience working with and communicating to all levels within an organization including senior leadership
  • Bi-lingual with fluency in written and spoken Spanish

Salary Range

The salary range for this position is $45,000-$50,000.
