Rutgers Global Health Institute seeks to address the inequities in cancer care and prevention that exist in sub-Saharan Africa, which contribute to great health disparities relative to most other regions of the world.
As an example, a cancer diagnosis in most parts of Africa carries an overall mortality rate of 75% for adults and 90% for children. The mortality rates in the West are exactly the reverse. Overall, in developed countries, 75% of adults and 90% of children survive a diagnosis of cancer. For people living in most of sub-Saharan Africa, there are minimal prevention and support services, long delays in cancer detection and diagnosis, deficiencies in the availability of cancer medications, unreliable data registries, and severe shortages in the specialty-trained workforce.
Rutgers Global Health Institute invites applications for an open-rank faculty position that will focus on identifying and addressing crucial deficiencies in cancer care, treatment, and prevention in sub-Saharan Africa. We are seeking applications from committed investigators to join our institute and the appropriate affiliated Rutgers school or health system at assistant or associate/full professor level (tenured or tenure track). Residence location is not restricted to New Jersey.
Successful candidates are expected to contribute to rigorous science and knowledge development. They would establish innovative, collaborative research programs and express a strong commitment to the graduate and medical education missions of Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences. Responsibilities include a combination of research, educational, and clinical care duties (if relevant). Teaching responsibilities may include didactic lectures to fellows, residents, medical and/or graduate students, and nursing staff. Interdisciplinary researchers are preferred.
Successful candidates are likely to share an appointment with Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey. Research programs at Rutgers Cancer Institute of New Jersey, the state's only National Cancer Institute-Designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, include cancer metabolism and growth, genomic instability and cancer genetics, cancer pharmacology, clinical investigations and precision therapeutics, and cancer prevention and control.
Candidates may be engaged in collaborations with existing research teams in sub-Saharan Africa, but this is not a requirement.
