UI REACH Student Support Specialist

Position

UI REACH is seeking candidates for the position of Student Support Specialist. The person in this position will provide social and emotional support to UI REACH students by developing strategic interventions to encourage student success, interacting directly with students to encourage social and emotional development and engagement, in groups and 1:1, provide operational support as part of the student support team and assist with developing and implementing short- and long-term strategic planning goals.  This person in this position will be primarily located in the residence halls.

UI REACH is a comprehensive transition program for students ages 18 - 25 years old with intellectual, cognitive and learning disabilities. UI REACH offers an integrated college experience in a caring and structured environment.  UI REACH Is a program within the College of Education.

This is a full time, 12- month specified term position which may be eligible for renewal.

Schedule: During the academic year, Tuesday - Saturday, afternoon - evening shift. Hours to be determined with supervisor.  Serves in staff on call rotation as scheduled.

Location: on site in Iowa City, Iowa

Education Requirement: A Bachelor of Arts degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Special Education, or a BSW or relevant degree or the equivalent combination of relevant work and education experience.

Required Qualifications

 

  • Demonstrated experience (typically 1 year or greater) working with young adults with special needs and/or learning disabilities in settings such as employment, educational, community or hospital.
  • Experience in connecting persons with disabilities with supports that foster success in settings such as academics, employment and/or the community
  •  Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Knowledge and application of communication skill and relationship building that demonstrate the ability to work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner.
  • Case management experience with young adults with special need and/or learning disabilities.

 

Desired Qualifications

 

  • Excellent problem-solving skills, including experience analyzing and resolving conflict, successfully navigating group dynamics and working 1:1 with individuals.
  • Ability to take initiative in engaging and connecting with students to promote engagement, social connectedness and inclusiveness.
