EMPLOYMENT SPECIALIST - UI REACH
The University of Iowa College of Education, Iowa City, IA

The UI REACH Program at the University of Iowa College of Education is seeking candidates for the position of Employment Specialist to assist in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of the Career Development and Transition experience for students participating in the UI REACH (Realizing Educational and Career Hopes) Program.  The person in the position will develop and maintain relationship with potential employers to develop internships and potential future employment outcomes for UI REACH students and will work collaboratively with UI REACH students and the UI REACH career and transition team to develop plans toward meaningful internship and employment options for UI REACH students. This is a full time, specified term appointment. May be subject to renewal.
Position location: College of Education, Lindquist Center, Iowa City, Iowa. Some travel may be required.  

Additional duties to include:

  • Provide individualized job coaching and assessments to support students in the workplace. Support to include task analysis, workplace skills assessments, situational assessments, assistive technology and accommodations. 
  • Use information learned about a job seeker to develop a plan toward meaningful employment, determine a list of employers, and conduct analysis of benefits.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of UI REACH Career curriculum and courses.
  • Mentor and advise UI REACH students, one to one, in career and transition areas.  
  • Monitor student progress; communicate progress and/or concerns and issues to the UI REACH administrative team and families. Communicate regularly with UI REACH parents and/or guardians.
  • Maintains documentation of services provided that clearly and legibly reflects the students' goals, staff intervention and support, student response and progress made.
  • Assist with planning and implementing special student programming, such as student orientation, move-in, family weekend, townhall meetings, transition fairs and campus activities.
  • Have the ability to work evenings and weekends as assigned. Participate in an on-call duty rotation. Assist students in conflict resolution, problem solving, and responding to emergencies.
  • Participate in professional development and training opportunities to ensure best practices are being implemented. 
  • Assist students in identifying and connecting with employment resources on campus and in the community, or other employment related student support services or organizations.
  • Assist in the supervision of student staff as assigned. 
  • Maintain effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, families, alumni, and the public including campus and community partners, adult service agencies, and other organizations.
  • Establish and maintain relationships with employers, industry organizations and public agencies to source job openings and secure employment and vocational training opportunities for students.
  • Assist in developing and maintaining paid and unpaid internships and student support services on campus. 
  • Participate in the collection of program and program component outcome data. 

Education Qualification
A Bachelor's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling/Placement, Human Services, Business or a related field or the equivalent combination of education and relevant work experience. Typical minimum experience is one year. 

Required Qualifications

  • Experience connecting persons with disabilities with work experiences and supporting students at a job site or work experience.
  • CESP certification (must have or acquire within 1 year of employment)
  • Demonstrated successful experience working in a team environment by exhibiting effective teamwork and contributing to an overall positive and productive work/team environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to interact with a diverse population.
  • Ability to effectively communicate (written and verbally); able to communicate effectively with internal and external constituents.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications.
  • Have a valid driver license and ability to meet and maintain UI Risk Management driving requirements.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience in working with individuals in a college, educational, or community setting requiring flexibility in managing multiple responsibilities. 
  • Experience with career education instruction, and/or transition planning (e.g., advising, connecting with services, and making referrals)
