Position title: Executive Director, The Arc Tennessee

Reports to:  Board of Directors

FLSA status: Exempt

Summary: The Arc Tennessee, a statewide, grassroots, non-profit advocacy organization for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families, is seeking an Executive Director to lead its team.  The Executive Director is responsible for supporting the mission of the organization by driving key policy and advocacy efforts that insure people with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families fully participate in their communities throughout their lifetime.  Collaborates with the Board of Directors, local chapters of The Arc in Tennessee, and key partners in the disability community to achieve the strategic goals and outcomes of the organization and the broader disability community.

Qualifications:  Master's degree in human services, public administration, business administration or related field preferred.  May substitute experience for education.  Minimum Bachelors' degree required.   Experience in organizational management functions including planning, budgeting, fiscal control, and supervision.  Demonstrated knowledge of characteristics of families and persons with intellectual or developmental disabilities, service needs and programming. 

Position Responsibilities

General

  • Advocates for children and adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities and their families.
  • Leads the development and implementation of The Arc's mission and its programs while maintaining compliance with fiscal, legal, and the organization's policies.
  • Provides information, support and resources to volunteer leadership necessary to ensure fulfillment of their financial and volunteer responsibilities to The Arc.
  • Establishes clear performance outcomes for the organization and aligns activities so that major goals and objectives of the organization are achieved in a timely manner.
  • Ensures that appropriate programs and services are provided to The Arc's Chapters consistent with priority needs and The Arc's mission.
  • Promotes excellence and creates a climate for motivation by role modeling behaviors that reflect trust, competence, vision, and inspiration.
  • Establishes and maintain effective relationships and/or networks with professional and social service organizations, providers, governmental entities and other volunteer organizations.
  • Builds and maintain positive relationships with the members, volunteers and staff of local chapters.
  • Encourages innovation through involvement of others in planning or problem solving.
  • Expands and upgrades knowledge and skills through on-the-job, program sponsored, or outside educational opportunities.
  • Provides information and referral to individuals, families and chapters looking for services.
  • Attends all board meetings and other meetings as requested.

 

Reporting

  • Develops and administers systems for data collection and reporting which support the organization's mission; maintains appropriate data for measuring and reporting on progress against objectives and program milestones.
  • Submits brief, periodic progress reports to the board and other reports as requested.
  • Submits reports to all contracting agencies and other funding sources as required
  • Ensures submission of invoices in a timely manner to collect monies to run the organization.
  • Develops and maintains a yearly budget with the budget and finance committee.

 

Staff Supervision

  • Supervise all employees working for The Arc of Tennessee using adopted personnel policies.
  • Approves all staff recommended for employment with the organization.
  • Plans, develops and prioritizes goals with a shared responsibility with staff utilizing each staff member's abilities.
  • Ensures job descriptions are created and reviewed periodically.
  • Ensures performance planning sessions (goal setting) are conducted with each staff member working for The Arc.
  • Provide day-to-day oversight of quality and quantity of work
  • Coach and counsel for the purpose of professional development, problem resolution, or corrective action; and providing appropriate recognition when an individual exceeds job requirements.
