Occupational Therapist, Pediatric - Children's Clinics - Tucson Arizona

Provides comprehensive occupational therapy assessment, treatment, and coordination to patients, ages of birth to 25 years.  Outpatient Clinic setting Monday-Friday, days.

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Provides comprehensive occupational therapy services to eligible patients, including those with feeding/swallowing, developmental, sensory integration, ADL, splinting, and DME needs.
  • Evaluates for and fabricates upper extremity splints; provides patient/family instruction in care and use.  Maintains safe care environment for patients.
  • Assist in maintenance of therapy equipment and supplies inventories.
  • Conducts age-appropriate clinical and functional occupational therapy assessments and develops therapy treatment plans based upon assessment finding and patient and family input.
  • Provides advanced-level direct patient treatment, according to treatment plan, updating treatment plan according to patient progress and established policies.
  • Maintains patient record confidentiality consistent with HIPAA guidelines.
  • Provides Occupational Therapy consultation to medical specialty clinics as assigned.
  • Participates in interdisciplinary specialty clinics as the expert on fine motor development, sensory processing, adaptive equipment, ADL performance, and participation in occupations.
  • Serves as educator in appropriate areas to patients, families, clinic staff, school staff, and others involved in patient care and programming.
  • Communicates effectively with team members, patients, families, and community healthcare professionals.  Uses effective verbal and non-verbal communication.
  • Participates in quality improvement and program development activities in specialty area, work team and, as assigned, in cross-functional teams. Participates in analysis of clinical and functional outcomes of care and uses outcomes information to guide care planning.
  • Supervises support personnel, including COTA, according to state, national, and professional guidelines.
  • Documents therapy services in the electronic health record in an accurate and timely manner, in accordance with clinic policies.
  • Accurately codes services to facilitate reimbursement for services provided.
  • Participates in new staff orientation and ongoing staff education. Occasionally provides education on areas of expertise. 
  • Safely transfers/lifts patients and equipment routinely weighing up to 25 lbs and occasionally weighing up to 100 lbs.
  • Positions self in a variety of positions, including floor sitting, chair sitting, and standing in order to provide physical support to children in the context of occupational therapy sessions. 

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

Bachelor's degree (B. A.), Master's, or Doctoral degree in Occupational Therapy from accredited college or university and a minimum of 2 years related experience preferred.  Spanish Language proficiency helpful.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Selects and administers appropriate standardized measures. Administers standardized measures reliably. 
  • Reliably adheres to AOTA and ArizOTA guidelines.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of a variety of therapeutic treatment techniques for pediatric occupational therapy.
  • Demonstrates a working knowledge of child development as is applicable to the field of occupational therapy.
  • Ability to assess and treat feeding/swallowing disorders of patients with cerebral palsy, orofacial anomalies, and other complex medical conditions, and to make recommendations about feeding to families, physicians, and other professionals.
  • Working knowledge of fundamentals of pediatric upper extremity splinting and ability to assess patient's splinting needs as part of an interdisciplinary team (physician, orthotist, and therapist).
  • Ability to assess patient's needs for adaptive tools/equipment and durable medical equipment, and to determine patient's optimal access to environmental controls, communication devices, and mobility.
  • Skills in appropriate and safe use of suspended equipment and other equipment typically used in management of patients with sensory integration difficulties.
  • Ability to safely and effectively use electro-physiological or mechanical equipment for the provision of occupational therapy care.
  • Selects and reliably administers appropriate assessment tools as part of an occupational therapy evaluation.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing with patients, their families and all levels of personnel.
  • Working knowledge of word processing software; ability to operate personal computer, printer, calculator, fax machine, shredder, copier another office equipment needed for documentation of patient care within established timeframes.
  • Ability to communicate with medical/allied health personnel, individually or in team presentations, regarding patient's progress, therapy precautions, treatment goals and discharge planning.
  • Working knowledge of primary payers' requirements relating to therapy services, and ability to meet them.
  • Working knowledge of primary agencies serving health, behavioral, social and educational needs of children with special health care needs in southeastern Arizona.
