This is an exciting opportunity for an energetic, entrepreneurial and self-motivated person to participate in the start-up of a new National Center on Justice and Disability.  Recent law school graduate with an interest in supporting the rights of victims, defendants/offenders and witnesses with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities (I/DD) needed to establish online resource center, training, technical assistance and consulting services for criminal justice professionals (e.g.  law enforcement, prosecuting and defense attorneys, judicial and court personnel, victims assistance organizations, corrections personnel and expert witnesses) and to provide programs services and supports for people with I/DD and their families.   

S/he will work as part of a team of talented professionals with expertise in I/DD, criminal justice, public policy, communications and marketing, led and facilitated by the Program Manager of Justice Initiatives.  The Criminal Justice Fellow's responsibilities will include, but not be limited to the following:

  • conduct legal research, develop articles, white papers and other materials and information
  • develop content and assist in implementation of The Center's web site and public communication strategy
  • develop project training materials (curricula, fact sheets, toolkits, etc.)
  • organize and oversee monthly webinar training
  • provide general information and referral and first-level technical assistance and coordinate the handling of more complex or intensive technical assistance
  • assist in development and maintenance of The Center's on-line resource library
  • assist with evaluation data collection and budget tracking
  • provide administrative and logistical support for The Center
  • arrange regular meetings and on-site trainings

The Criminal Justice Fellow will have regular and extensive contact with justice and disability professionals, as well as individuals with disabilities and their family members.   Some travel may be required.  Performs similar or other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Law degree from an accredited law school, with demonstrated interest in criminal justice and/or disability rights
  • Internship, volunteer or employment experience  in criminal justice, intellectual/developmental disabilities or disability rights field preferred, but not required
  • Exceptional legal research, writing and policy analysis skills
  • Excellent communication, organizational and interpersonal skills; detail-oriented
  • Entrepreneurial instinct and spirit; high level of self-motivation and ability to work independently
  • Ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and with external stakeholders, including persons of diverse backgrounds
  • Comfortable with communications and  social media
  • Positive attitude and excellent problem solving skills
  • Ability to deal effectively with diverse clientele by telephone
  • Knowledge of subject matter  preferred
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs; experience with Raisers Edge preferred, but not required.
