Guidance on Section 504 and Restraint and Seclusion

The U.S. Department of Education released a set of guidance documents that provide information about the legal limitations on the use of restraint and seclusion with regard to students with disabilities. These include a new Parent and Educator Resource Guide to Section 504, a Q & A sheet, and a Dear Colleague Letter issued by the Office for Civil Rights.



New Guidance on Rights of Students with Disabilities

The U.S. Department of Education released a fact sheet on the rights of students with disabilities in charter schools. The document is intended to inform parents, students and the charter school community as to students' rights under Section 504 and IDEA.



ESSA Final Regulations Fact Sheet

The Department of Education has issued final regulations to implement provisions of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) that concern school accountability, data reporting and state plans. This fact sheet provides information about the regulations and new requirements that states must fulfill.



AUCD Issue Brief on Final FY14 Appropriations

President Obama signed the omnibus appropriations bill to fund the remainder of fiscal year 2014. AUCD has prepared this issue brief on the funding for programs important to the AUCD Network and people with disabilities.

Obama Administration will waive some requirements of No Child Left Behind

President Obama issued remarks today about his administration's plan to waive certain requirements for states under the Elementary and Secondary Education Act ("No Child Left Behind"). See the video, press release and fact sheet on how states can qualify.



Bullying and Students with Disabilities

This briefing paper by the National Council on Disability was written for the White House Conference on Bullying Prevention and examines the problem of bullying in schools.



Preparing General Education Teachers to Improve Outcomes for Students with Disabilities

The American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education and the National Center for Learning Disabilities published this white paper highlighting the importance of reforming preparation for general education teachers to bring about better academic outcomes for students with disabilities.



Principles for Teacher Quality

AUCD signed on to a letter to Congress and a document outlining principles for ensuring teacher quality in light of a recent change in the statutory definition of "highly qualified teacher" in No Child Left Behind (Elementary and Secondary Education Act).
