COVID-19 Vaccines for Children with Developmental Disabilities: Parent Survey of Willingness and Concerns

Compared to the general pediatric population, parents of nearly 400 children with a DD were more willing for them to receive COVID-19 vaccines. In this new pre-print by the RFK UCEDD (Bronx, NY) and SCDD UCEDD (Rochester, NY), parents of 75%, 49%, and 38% of children aged 12-17, 6-11 and 0-5 years-old, respectively, had gotten or would get their child vaccinated ASAP. (the study was fielded when vaccines were authorized for children aged 12+ years.)

Don't Forget about Transportation!

Safe, accessible, reliable, and affordable transportation is a key to the ability of individuals with disabilities, seniors, and those with low income to access health care, education, employment, and community services. But, too often, creating mobility and transportation partnerships is an afterthought in service planning.

For her "Outstanding Research on Autism in Higher Education," Jessica Monahan, research manager with the University of Delaware Center for Disabilities Studies' Spectrum Scholars program, has won an inaugural Excellence in Autism Support award from the College Autism Network.

It's Up to You: Reaching Out to DSPs

Funded by AUCD, the MN UCEDD, in partnership with the National Alliance for Direct Support Professionals, has produced a series of short public service announcements (PSAs) of direct support professionals encouraging their colleagues to get vaccinated against COVID-19, an urgent need.

KU and UNC Collaborate on Propel Project

Launched in 2020, the Propel Project will examine the impact of a comprehensive intervention combining the Self-Determined Learning Model of Instruction and Peer Supports, on academic, social, and functional outcomes for autistic secondary students in inclusive general education classrooms. This collaboration between the University of Kansas (KU) and the University of North Carolina (UNC) is led by KU Center on Developmental Disabilities Director (KUCDD) Karrie A. Shogren, KU Juniper Gardens Children's Project Director Brian Boyd, KUCDD Assistant Research Professor Sheida K. Raley, and UNC Associate Professor Kara Hume.

Mailman Center Launches Prevention Research Program for Children with Special Health Care Needs

A research program led by the Mailman Center for Child Development at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine received funding of $900,000 from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) Maternal and Child Health Bureau. The study "Health Equity at the Intersection of Disability and Ethnic Group Status: Adaptation of 'Healthy Caregivers-Healthy Children' for Children with Special Healthcare Needs (HC3)" will implement and evaluate the effectiveness of an obesity prevention program for children with developmental, physical, and/or intellectual disabilities.

MN LEND Fellows Support Sensory-Friendly Vaccine Clinics in the Community

In December 2021, AUCD trainee Alicia Zhang worked with MN LEND fellows Raniya Yimam and Brittany Miller to support a community-based, sensory-friendly vaccine clinic in Minneapolis, MN. Zhang, Yimam, and Miller are mentored by Dr. Jen Hall-Lande and Dr. Lynda Lahti Anderson at the MN LEND program at the Institute on Community Integration (ICI), which is also the MN UCEDD. This sensory-friendly clinic is a collaboration among community partners, including the Autism Society of Minnesota (AUSM), the Multicultural Autism Action Network, and Hennepin County Healthcare.

Post-Secondary: Moving Minnesota Ahead

Federal law creates college opportunities for students with intellectual disabilities, but Minnesota lags behind on that promise. Working with ICI staff and others, MN LEND fellow Sally Sexton returns to ICI to develop a website promoting post-secondary education options for students with intellectual disabilities. Supporting Families Summit: Celebrating 10 Years

In recognition of the complex roles of family caregivers, and the challenges they face, leaders in the disability field came together at the 2011 Wingspread Summit to develop policy recommendations to improve supports for family caregivers. UMKC-IHD's Associate Director, Sheli Reynolds played a role in helping to plan the Wingspread Summit and later co-authored a report, "Building a National Agenda for Supporting Families with a Member with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities."

The Ohio State University Nisonger Center LEND Trainees Address Health Disparities through Virtual Sessions for New Mothers

Moms2B, a community-based pregnancy program for low-income mothers in central Ohio, was established by The Ohio State University Medical Center in 2010 to decrease high infant mortality rates in the state and help mothers deliver healthy, full-term infants. This community-based program meets weekly throughout pregnancy and through the infant's first year to provide education and support to moms. In-person meetings occur in a safe, familiar space where Moms can ask questions, receive education on infant development and reproductive health, and connect with local services.

University of Miami Miller School of Medicine Launches Innovative Transition Care Clinic for Individuals with Disabilities

Transition from pediatric health care to adult-oriented health care can be especially complicated for people with disabilities and/or chronic health conditions. To make this transition easier, the Mailman Center for Child Development in the Department of Pediatrics, in collaboration with the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, recently launched the Progression Across Transition in Healthcare (PATH) program.

Updates from the CU Pediatric PT Residency Program

The University of Colorado Pediatric Residency is a post-professional physical therapy residency program of the University of Colorado Physical Therapy Program in the School of Medicine and JFK Partners. The residency was established in 2011 under the Founding Director, Mary Jane K. Rapport, PT, DPT, PhD, FAPTA, and it received initial accreditation in 2012.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Produces Trio of Videos on the COVID-19 Vaccine and Individuals with Intellectual Disability

The Vanderbilt Kennedy Center of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VKC UCEDD)(TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) has produced three brief videos to build COVID-19 vaccine confidence in the disability community. These videos feature an adult with an intellectual disability and a parent and her daughter with autism, who share their personal experiences, hesitancy, and decision-making related to getting themselves or their child vaccinated.
