DSP COVID19 Follow Up Survey
The Institute on Community Integration at the University of Minnesota, in partnership with the National Alliance of Direct Support Professionals, is conducting a survey on the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on direct support professionals. After more than eight months since a national emergency was declared, we want to know how DSPs are doing and identify the most effective ways to protect DSPs and the people they support. Direct Support Professionals can complete the survey here. Their answers will be anonymous. National and state-specific results from the survey will be shared widely in March 2021.

Voting: National and State Perspectives - Podcast Intierview with Maureen van Stone, Esq, MS
Maureen van Stone, Esq., MS, director of the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) was recently featured on a new podcast series presented by The Johns Hopkins University Disability Health Research Center. Ms. van Stone is the director of the Maryland UCEDD, and was the first guest speaker on the new podcast series titled Included: The Disability Equity Podcast. This inaugural episode focused on the process of educating candidates on issues important to the disability community, voting accessibility for those with disabilities, and the importance of the disability vote.

Access for All at the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden
Since the beginning of the Zoo Access for All program, LEND's Program Director, Dr. Jen Smith, has collaborated with the Cincinnati Zoo & Botanical Garden (CZBG) to train zoo employees and identify priority areas to increase accessibility. Over four hundred CZBG employees have gone through the unique training with Dr. Smith, learning some of the types of developmental disabilities they may encounter at the zoo, how they can support those with developmental disabilities, and how they can assist families when issues arise.

CDD Affiliated Faculty, Dr. Marcia Montague and Dr. Carly Gilson Awarded Two Major Grants from the U.S Department of Education
CDD Affiliated Faculty, Dr. Marcia Montague and Dr. Carly Gilson, have been awarded two major grants from the U.S Department of Education Dr. Linda Castillo (PI) and Dr. Marcia Montague (Co-PI) received a Heart of Texas GEAR UP Partnership grant. This grant totals $6.3 million over the next seven years to provide comprehensive support services to over 1,200 7th grade students to help them prepare for and succeed in post-secondary education. Partner districts include Bryan and Hearne ISDs. Dr. Carly Gilson received a Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities(PSID) grant. This grant will provide approximately $2.2 million in funding over the next five years to support our staff, students, research, program expansion, and outreach efforts to other schools across Texas.

Former Trainee- Making A Difference in the Latinx Community
Recent Va-LEND graduate Fiorella Carrillo-Kimbrough volunteers with Caminos, a Richmond-based support group that works with Spanish-speaking families with children who have autism or other neurodevelopmental disabilities. The group incorporates the use of cultural brokers and provides culturally appropriate education and support.

HDI Staff receive the Tom Gravitt Advocacy Award
Tom Gravitt Advocacy Award from the Kentucky Congress on Spinal Cord Injury (SCI). This award recognizes individuals who have had an exemplary impact on the SCI community and the disability community at large. These individuals enrich the lives of people with disabilities by being an advocate who fosters respect, access, and equal opportunities for all.

Iowa's UCEDD Welcomes Back Caitlin Owens
The Iowa UCEDD is excited to welcome Caitlin Owens back to the team as our new operations manager. A social worker by training, Owens has many years of experience working across the spectrum of mental health and disability services, from job coaching to behavioral intervention to systems change work. She is a former LEND trainee, a recipient of the Alfred Healy Leadership Award in Developmental Disabilities, a graduate of the AUCD Leadership Academy, and she previously worked at the Iowa UCEDD from 2015-2018.

Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Receives Grant to Improve Statewide Transition Practices for Youth and Adults with Disabilities
The Federal Administration for Community Living has awarded a Community-Based Transition Partnership Planning Grant to the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (VKC UCEDD). The VKC UCEDD, one of 10 UCEDDs awarded, will convene partnerships to develop a framework to ensure community integration, through the creation of a sustainable, high quality, community-based transition pilot.

Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute 2019-2020 Annual Report
MI-DDI is proud to share its accomplishments for 2019-2020. Although our building on Wayne State University's�campus has been closed and staff are working remotely due to COVID-19, this continues to be an exciting time of growth and change for MI-DDI. The numbers shared are just part of the story. The real story is how our nationally recognized faculty, staff and students are making a positive difference in individual lives across Michigan and beyond. The growth and change MI-DDI has experienced this past year is due to the outstanding work of our team.

IHD Awarded Large Federal Grant to Support Students with Intellectual Disabilities - Radically-Inclusive Support and Coaching Program Coming to Northern Arizona
The Institute for Human Development (IHD) at Northern Arizona University was recently awarded a five-year, approximately $2.5M grant from the United States Department of Education, Transition and Postsecondary Programs for Students with Intellectual Disabilities (TPSID) to develop and implement a radically-inclusive support and coaching program for students with intellectual disabilities (ID) to attend postsecondary educational institutions throughout Northern Arizona.

nTIDE October 2020 Jobs Report: Job numbers hold steady for Americans with disabilities
October's job numbers showed small changes for Americans with and without disabilities, according to today's National Trends in Disability Employment - Monthly Update (nTIDE), issued by Kessler Foundation and the University of New Hampshire's Institute on Disability (UNH-IOD). Although people with disabilities have remained engaged in the labor market, the ongoing effects of the pandemic and uncertainty about continued federal aid are major concerns as the year draws to a close.

The UNC Department of Neurology's Hunter, Cejas Receive 2020 Broyhill Research Award in Child Neurology
The UNC Department of Neurology is proud to announce that child neurologists Senyene Hunter, MD, PhD, and Diana Cejas, MD, MPH, are this year�s recipients of the UNC Broyhill Research Award in Child Neurology. The goal of the Broyhill Research Award in Child Neurology is to support novel studies of the developing nervous system or the impact of diseases on the developing nervous system.

ICI UMN Parent Resource Videos: Supporting Your Child's Learning at Home
Two U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs (OSEP) national technical assistance centers --TIES Center and the National Center on Educational Outcomes (NCEO)-- of the Institute on Community Integration (UCEDD) at the University of Minnesota have jointly created a video series addressing how parents of students with significant cognitive disabilities can support their child's learning at home during distance learning brought about by COVID 19. The first four videos in an eleven part series are available to share with parents.

Join us on Wednesday during the conference for the pre-recorded Closing Plenary: Engaging with Congress to Achieve Equitable Communities to learn about the legislative work and priorities of elected disability advocates in Congress. This year, we are pleased to announce that Senator Sherrod Brown (Ohio), Senator Bob Casey (Pennsylvania), Senator Patty Murray (Washington), and Legislative Assistant Gil Ruiz with the Office of Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (New York) have pre-recorded their parts for the plenary. John Tschida, AUCD's Executive Director, and Rylin Rodgers, AUCD's Director of Public Policy, are the co-moderators for the discussion. In prior years, we have heard from leaders on both sides of the aisle, including Senator Bob Casey (Pennsylvania), Senator Steve Daines (Montana), Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (New York), Congresswoman Deb Haaland (New Mexico), Congresswoman Cathy McMorris Rodgers (Washington) and Senator Patty Murray (Washington).
