Amy Grattan Named Director of Sherlock Center (RI UCEDD)

Amy Grattan, an expert in special education with a focus on early childhood, has been appointed director of the Paul V. Sherlock Center on Disabilities at Rhode Island College. Grattan "brings a breadth of knowledge and experience in the field of disability and special education," according to a Sherlock Center statement on her appointment.

Dr. Avila (VT LEND) Wins 2 Awards

2019 Maternal and Child Health Bureau Director's Award and 2019 Sister Elizabeth Candon Distinguished Service Award from Vermont Women in Higher Education

The MCHB Director's Award in the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) is presented to an individual who has noteworthy national level contributions to the health of infants, mothers, children, adolescents and children with special health care needs (CSHCN). This prestigious award is a well-deserved recognition of Dr. Avila contribution to the MCH field.

Kentucky UCEDD Collaboration at ASHG

Staff representing University Centers of Excellence in Developmental Disabilities collaborated to deliver a presentation at the annual American Society of Human Genetics meeting in Houston, TX on October 18. Dr. Kara Ayers, Associate Director of the University of Cincinnati UCEDD, and Stephanie Meredith, Medical Outreach Director at The University of Kentucky Human Development Institute joined Dr. John Constantino, Director of the Washington University in St. Louis Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities Research Center, Dr. Igna Van den Veyver a leading Maternal Fetal Medicine Specialist from Baylor College of Medicine; Katie Stoll, Executive Director of the Genetic Support Foundation; and Dr. Marsha Michie, an anthropologist from Case Western Reserve University to address the intersection of disability and genetics. This presentation was made possible by ASHG, in collaboration with the Association of University Centers and NICHD.

Mailman Center Director Named Senior Associate Dean for Child Health (FL UCEDD/LEND)

Dr. Daniel Armstrong has been named senior associate dean for child health, responsible for leading and coordinating the expansion of child health for the Miller School and UHealth, including opportunities for development of a South Florida Child Health Network.

The Rural Institute Publishes Fact Sheet: The Least Restrictive Approaches to Supporting Individuals as Decision Makers (MT UCEDD)

The Rural Institute has worked on issues surrounding guardianship for many years. In the late 2000s, Rural Institute staff members Marsha Katz and Ellen Condon, and Theresa Baldry, who was working for PLUK (Parents, Let's Unite for Kids) at the time, collaborated with various community partners and created tools and resources focused on alternatives to guardianship.

Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (MT UCEDD) announces recipient of the 2019 Community Investment Fund

In 2015, the Rural Institute for Inclusive Communities (RIIC) established the Community Investment Fund (CIF). CIF awards support innovative projects or programs that help Montanans with disabilities live, learn, work and play alongside people without disabilities. Consumer Advisory Council (CAC) members use their leadership and advocacy skills to review each application, evaluate the merits of each proposal, and award the funds.

WVU Center for Excellence in Disabilities Developing on Campus College Program for Grads with I/DD

High school graduates with intellectual and developmental disabilities will soon be joining West Virginia University's campus through a new program developed to prepare them for independence that will provide improved academic, social engagement and real-world work experiences. Students, ages 18-23, enrolled in the program "tentatively named The Country Roads Program" will live in a shared residential housing arrangement, participate in social activities across campus and receive career education and training.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Investigator Discovers One More Piece to the Autism Puzzle

Mutations in a subunit of a receptor that binds the major inhibitory neurotransmitter GABAA in the brain have been linked, through a common mechanism, to epilepsy, autism and intellectual disability, researchers at Vanderbilt University Medical Center and colleagues report. Jing-Qiong "Katty" Kang, M.D., Ph.D. "This work represents a critical piece in the whole puzzle we are working on, the impaired GABAergic pathway in epilepsy, autism and intellectual disability," said the paper's corresponding author, Jing-Qiong "Katty" Kang, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of Neurology and Pharmacology and a Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) investigator.

Kennedy Krieger Institute hosted the 9th Annual Room to Grow: Journey to Cultural and Linguistic Competency Conference on September 17th 2019. Harolyn Belcher, MD, MHS, Director for the Center for Diversity in Public Health Leadership at Kennedy Krieger Institute welcomed over 180 attendees and addressed this year's theme of ensuring inclusion and provided updates on what we have learned since the publication of the National Academies of Sciences' important report entitled, "Neurons to Neighborhoods".

New Publication on Transportation Patterns for Working-age Americans with Disabilities (NH UCEDD)

A recently published paper by Megan Henly and Debra Brucker at the Institute on Disability at the University of New Hampshire analyzed data on travel patterns to consider ways in which people with disabilities differ from people without disabilities in their daily transportation.
