AUCD Conference to Feature Verizon Media/Getty Images Photography Project
AUCD is excited to feature information about the "The Disability Collection", a growing collection of stock photography created by Getty Images, Verizon Media and the National Disability Leadership Alliance, that authentically portrays disability in everyday life. A display and information about the project will be available at the conference on Monday, November 18th in the registration area for attendees to learn more.

Reimschisel steps down as director of LEND Program at Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND); Lee Named Successor
Tyler Reimschisel, former director of Division of Developmental Medicine and the Center for Child Development, and former director of the Vanderbilt Kennedy Center's (TN IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Vanderbilt Consortium LEND program, has been appointed to founding associate provost for interprofessional education, research, and collaborative practice at Case Western Reserve University and Cleveland Clinic.

Assessment Day First Step Toward Employment (NE UCEDD/LEND)
On the screen hanging in the front of the room is a message written in red letters: Welcome to Assessment Day. This May 2019 morning is the beginning of assessment day for Project SEARCH, the medical center-based job-training program for adults with developmental disabilities. There are 20 applicants this year, and they will spend the morning going from station to station, taking part in interviews and being assessed on various skills.

Iowa LEND Trainees Begin the Year with a Poverty Simulation
What is it like to live without enough money to buy groceries for your family? Or pay for bus fare to get to the market? How do you find a job that provides a living wage? Or get to a job interview if you can't afford child care for your toddler? The new class of trainees from Iowa's LEND program encountered these issues and others, while participating in a poverty simulation to launch their training year.

Mike Abel Joins Missouri UCEDD as Associate Director of Research and Evaluation
The University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Institute for Human Development (IHD) (MO UCEDD) is pleased to announce the addition of Michael B. Abel, Ph.D., as new Associate Director of Research and Evaluation. American/Russian Handbook on Community Living and Employment (MN UCEDD/LEND)
For the first time, American and Russian experts have created a bilingual resource that shares innovative approaches to community living and employment for adults with disabilities. The Handbook on Community Living and Employment, co-published by ICI and Life Route Foundation in Russia, identifies the challenges both countries face on the road to full inclusion and provides readers with case studies and strategies that have achieved success.

Liz visited Alabama to see what these three groups look like in that state. Linda Russo is from the Alabama UCEDD which is at the Civitan International Research Center & Sparks Clinics. James Tucker is from the Alabama Disabilities Advocacies Program which is the P&A in Alabama.

Autism CARES Signed into Law
AUCD applauds the signing of the Autism Cares Act of 2019 into law by President Trump. This bipartisan law will expand research and coordination, increase public awareness and surveillance, and expand interdisciplinary health professional training to identify and support individuals with autism and their families.

MNLEND Fellow Becomes a Special Education Director at Minneapolis Public Schools Organization: Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD/LEND)
The Minneapolis Public Schools have chosen Deeqaifrah ("Deeqa") Hussein (MNLEND Fellow, 2017-18) as a Special Education Director. She credits many people and organizations for helping her get the position, including her husband Abdi Hussein (MNLEND Fellow, 2016-17) and family (she has two children with autism); the University of St. Thomas where she is earning her doctorate in Educational Leadership and Learning; her internship at the Minneapolis Public Schools with Rochelle Cox, Executive Director of Special Education and Health (and Hussein's new supervisor); and the student/family advocacy skills she learned as a MNLEND Fellow. Hussein spent the past two years as an Autism Itinerant Teacher, and for two years before that she was a High School Special Education Resource Teacher

Dr. Joshuaa Allison-Burbank wins National Center for American Indian Enterprise Development 2019 Native American 40 under 40 award (VT LEND)
Each year, the National Center recognizes 40 emerging Native American and Alaska Native leaders who have demonstrated leadership, initiative, and dedication and made significant contributions in business, their professions, or in their communities. Dr. Allison-Burbank was recognized for his work as a speech language pathologist, lecturer and researcher.

Iowa LEND Trainee Experience
Prior to their graduation on May 2, Iowa's twenty-three LEND trainees concluded their LEND experience by hosting the program's first LEND Research Poster Session. Trainees identified an area of interest, and then with the assistance of their training directors, either conducted a research project or performed a comprehensive review of current research. The Iowa LEND trainees complete over 370 hours of training over two semesters; the curriculum is focused on interdisciplinary clinical care, disability policy, culturally responsive care, and family/patient and professional partnerships.
