New: A Guide to Interacting with Police for Individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities
The University of Cincinnati UCEDD has developed a new brochure on: A Guide to Interacting with Police for Individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities. People with intellectual, cognitive or developmental disabilities get involved as both victims and suspects/offenders with law enforcement and with the criminal justice system. The police are ready to help in many different ways to help us feel safe.

Dr. Kelly Nye-Lengerman Named Director of Institute on Disability/UCED
Dr. Kelly Nye-Lengerman, a leader in employment policy and services, workforce development, person-centered practices, and evaluation, has been named director of the Institute on Disability/UCED (IOD) at the University of New Hampshire effective June 8, 2020. Before joining the IOD, Dr. Nye-Lengerman served for 11 years at the Institute on Community Integration at the University of Minnesota.

First Autism Diagnosis Certificate Students Set to Graduate
A new certificate program helps nurse practitioners provide early diagnosis and health services for children on the autism spectrum. The program is unique in its inclusion of both UA LEND faculty and UA LEND graduates.

IOD Awarded $600,000 to Extend New England Regional Genetics Network (NERGN )
The Institute on Disability (IOD) at the University of New Hampshire has received a four-year renewal for the New England Regional Genetics Network (NERGN) from the Health Resources and Services Administration of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.

AUCD Invests Over $4M In Act Early Network Response to COVID-19
The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) expanded its National Center on Disability in Public Health efforts with an investment of over $4M in the Act Early Network through an Act Early Network-wide Response to COVID-19 made possible by a cooperative agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Iowa's UCEDD Hosts Inaugural Summer Youth Leadership Academy
With funding from the Iowa Developmental Disabilities Council (DD Council), and working in partnership with the Iowa Department of Human Rights (DHR), the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD, Iowa's UCEDD) hosted a virtual five-day Youth Leadership Academy during August. Six youth, aged 15 to 22, from east central and northwestern Iowa, participated in the inaugural cohort.

2020-2021 Virtual LEND Orientation
The Ohio State University Nisonger Center held the 2020-2021 LEND Orientation virtually on August 26, 2020 and welcomed 19 new, full-time trainees, 2 part-time trainees and 14 returning trainees representing 16 different disciplines. We're excited to start a new academic year and continue training next-level graduate students, post-doctoral fellows and community leaders in neurodevelopmental disabilities!

ACES-Talking with Doctors
If you communicate using little or no speech, you can now find ways to get your doctor to listen to you...and get paid $250! The Institute on Disabilities at Temple University's TechOWL program, Augmentative Communication and Empowerment Supports (ACES), is launching a series called Talking with Doctors. Talking with Doctors is a training series that can teach you about tools to use to make your own health decisions. You will even create your personal video to get doctors to listen so they know what is important to you.

Closing gaps: Autism's health disparities
The MN UCEDD has joined a national research network that aims to improve the physical health and well-being of children and adults with autism. Led by UCLA and some of America's best autism researchers, the multidisciplinary team will study autism as it relates to overall healthcare access and quality, primary care utilization, physical activity, stress, sleep, substance abuse, sexual health, neurological issues, and genetics, among others. The project will also explore healthcare disparities among women and people from underserved or vulnerable populations.

Georgia UCEDD Research Effects of COVID-19 on Adults with IDD & DSPs
Since the emergence of the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19) last year, and its subsequent spread into a pandemic, we have seen a number of communities step up to face this unique challenge. Many doctors, scientists, community leaders, and politicians are using their strengths to combat this disease. Researchers too, are facing a new struggle to address what happens during and after COVID-19 affects the daily lives of millions of people.

Kennedy Krieger Institute Launches Office of Health, Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity
Institute appoints Harolyn Belcher, MD, MHS as its inaugural chief diversity officer
Kennedy Krieger Institute, a non-profit organization internationally known for providing a wide range of health and education services for children, adolescents and adults with diseases, disorders or injuries that impact the nervous system, announced today that it is launching the Office of Health, Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity (O-HEID). The new Office is designed to promote the health and well-being of those who work, train, and receive services at the Institute through culturally relevant, evidence- and equity-based approaches that assure diversity and inclusion. Harolyn Belcher, MD, MHS, will lead O-HEID (pronounced O-Heed) and serve as the Institute's inaugural vice president and chief diversity officer.

Social Determinants of Health Resources to Support Implementation of Screening and Referrals
Developed by the National Resource Center for Patient/Family-Centered Medical Home, in partnership with the National Academy for State Health Policy, this fact sheet series discussessocial determinants of health (SDoH) screening and referrals for children and youth with special health care needs (CYSHCN) and their families. Opportunities for collaboration and partnership between Medicaid, Title V Maternal and Child Health / CYSHCN programs, and pediatricians are discussed. State-level case studies provide innovative and replicable strategies for implementing SDoH screening and community referrals.
