UM Law Students Research Disability Access at Vacation Rentals (MT UCEDD)

The Americans with Disabilities Act, passed in 1990, protects people with disabilities against discrimination in employment settings, state and local government services, and public-serving businesses. As vacation rental properties such as Airbnb and VRBO grow in demand and straddle the line between private residences and public business, how or if ADA applies was - until recently - somewhat unclear. Law students at the University of Montana set out to provide some answers to this and other ADA questions.

Aetna Medicaid Announces New Innovative Approach for Members With Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (MO UCEDD)

Aetna Medicaid, a CVS health business (NYSE: CVS), has announced an outcomes-based model for members with intellectual and development disabilities (IDD). The new model, which will launch on January 1, 2019 in Kansas, will be partially based on the Charting the LifeCourse framework developed by the University of Missouri-Kansas City (UMKC) Institute for Human Development, Missouri's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities Education, Research and Services.

Kelly Nye-Lengerman Delivers Keynote at UMaine World Usability Day (ME UCEDD)

Kelly Nye-Lengerman, Ph.D., a research associate at the University of Minnesota Institute on Community Integration (MN UCEDD), recently delivered the keynote address for "Equity, Access and Inclusion: A World Usability Day Event" at the University of Maine. Her keynote was sponsored by the University of Maine Center for Community Inclusion and Disability Studies (ME UCEDD). "We had an opportunity to forge a strong collaboration with UMaine's Office of Student Accessibility Services on their conference," said UCEDD director, Alan Cobo-Lewis. Under the leadership of director Sara Henry, the office serves nearly 800 students with documented disabilities at UMaine.

New Encyclopedia Announcement: "Disability in American Life: An Encyclopedia of Concepts, Policies, and Controversies." (IL UCEDD/LEND)

This encyclopedia is edited by Illinois UCEDD faculty Tamar Heller, Sarah Parker Harris, Carol Gill, and Rob Gould. This exciting new publication includes entries by faculty and trainees throughout the network as well as other noted scholars in disabilities across many disciplines. The forward to the encyclopedia was written by AUCD Executive Director Andy Imparato. Once primarily thought of as a medical issue, disability is now more widely recognized as a critical issue of identity, personhood, and social justice.

Professional Fellows Program for Inclusive Disability Employment

AUCD is excited to announce that the host application for the International Professional Fellows Program for Inclusive Disability Employment (PFP-IDE) is now open. PFP-IDE is a new U.S. Department of State professional exchange program that will enable 20 emerging leaders in inclusive employment from Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda to participate in a five-week Fellowship in the U.S. where they will learn about disability rights and inclusive employment.

Fact Sheets Created From Disabled Parenting Project (OH UCEDD/LEND)

These fact sheets were created as part of our Cincinnati LEND Seminars in Evidence-Based Medicine project. A team of LEND trainees and faculty members conducted research on best practices while also consulting with stakeholders, including women with disabilities who have experienced pregnancy and prenatal care as well as medical providers.

Working to Improve the Patient Experience (AL LEND)

Each year, LEND Trainees at the Civitan-Sparks Clinics in Birmingham, Alabama develop a project that will aid in improving the experience of our patients. As an interdisciplinary clinic, families who come into the Civitan-Sparks Clinics see a wide variety of professionals, including Speech/Language Therapy, Occupational Therapy, Nutrition, Pediatrics, Audiology, Psychology, and Dental. As such, many parents are unsure of what to expect from a visit with each of these disciplines, particularly when they are new to our clinic. Additionally, while the range of areas of concerns that families come in with is broad, visits to each of our disciplines are largely the same clinic to clinic.

Georgia LEND hosts David Satcher Lecture on Leadership on the Elimination of Health Disparities

Georgia State University's (GSU) Georgia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (GaLEND) Program - housed within the Center for Leadership in Disability (CLD) - has had a partnership with the Satcher Health Leadership Institute at the Morehouse School of Medicine extending back to 2010. GaLEND recruits a fellow who participates in the Health Leadership Policy Fellowship at Morehouse School of Medicine and GaLEND at GSU concurrently. In 2015, GaLEND and the Satcher Health Leadership Institute created a partnership with Emory's Center for Excellence in Maternal Child Health (MCH). These three institutions offer the MCH Leadership Collaborative each Fall semester which draws students and faculty from across the three institutions to prepare for leadership in a rapidly changing world.

Maureen Van Stone, Esq., MS, Named as Kennedy Krieger Institute's Director for the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MD UCEDD)

Maureen Van Stone, Esq., MS, Named as Kennedy Krieger Institute's Director for the Maryland Center for Developmental Disabilities (MCDD) effective December 17, 2018. Maureen earned a bachelor's degree in psychology at the University of Southern California, a master's degree in developmental psychology at The Johns Hopkins University, and a Juris Doctor at Whittier Law School, with a concentration on children's legal issues. She holds an adjunct faculty position at Towson University.

Michigan Development Disabilities Institute (UCEDD-MI) Awarded Nearly $1 Million Grant from Michigan Health Endowment Fund

Awards will support older adult caregiver programs

The Michigan Health Endowment Fund has awarded nearly $1 million to two Wayne State University programs that protect and enhance the well-being of our area's older adults and caregivers. The Health Fund granted $413,903 to Dr. Peter Lichtenberg's program, SAFE: Caregiver Empowerment, and $500,000 to the Michigan Development Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) for its program, Michigan Older Caregivers of Emerging Adults with Autism and other Neurodevelopmental Disabilities (MI-OCEAN) Family Support Project.

New Toolkit from the Council on Quality and Leadership: Building the Framework for IDD Quality Measures

The report 'Building The Framework For IDD Quality Measurement' provides a roadmap for the key measures which would support people with IDD to receive high quality services and supports. It serves as one of many steps towards quality value-based services for people with IDD.
