On Saturday, September 29, 2018, individuals devoted to creating solutions for individuals who experience disabilities participated in the first national Assistive Technology (AT) Makers' Fair: Making AT for All Conference & Expo in Concord, NH.

AUCD'S UCEDD Resource Center Announces Awardee for Training Initiative Addressing Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome for the National Network of UCEDDs

The Administration on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AIDD) sought a lead UCEDD to build the capacity of the national network of UCEDDs to address the impact of Neonatal Abstinence Syndrome (NAS) through collaborative implementation of best and promising practices across federally-funded networks to support child, caregiver, and family outcomes in the local communities. Federally-funded networks include those funded by AIDD, Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

HRSA's MCHB Announces Phase 1 Winners of the Childhood Obesity Prevention Challenge!

HRSA's Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB) has selected 10 winners from Phase 1 of the Using Technology to Prevent Childhood Obesity in Low-Income Families and Communities Challenge. Henry Ford Health System's submission, "5-2-1-0 Go App!" is a collaboration with Michigan's LEND program and the Michigan Developmental Disabilities Institute (MI-DDI) at Wayne State University. The project proposes to enhance an app targeting kids ages 9-13 with four mini games based on 5-2-1-0. The overall aim of the app is to promote healthy food choices, identify community food resources, and provide exercise activities - which will be made adaptable for children with disabilities.

CDD (TX UCEDD) Welcomes Vanessa Richard and Joana Idakwo

Vanessa Richard comes to Center on Disability and Development from Texas Workforce Commission/Vocational Rehabilitation Services where she was a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor. Vanessa and her family transitioned from Georgia to Texas in 2013 where she served in the capacity of Rehabilitation Unit Manager with Georgia Rehabilitation Agency. Her extensive background in vocational rehabilitation provided her the opportunity to develop and coordinate services for individuals with disabilities on the community level. Additionally, she also has experience at the higher educational level where she worked as an accommodation counselor with Sam Houston State University Services for Students with Disabilities developing classroom accommodation plans. Vanessa is a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor (CRC) with a Master's degree in Rehabilitation Counseling from University of Kentucky, and a Master's degree in Human Resource Management from Troy University. Joana Idakwo comes to the Center on Disability and Development from the Houston Independent School District, where she worked as a Transition Coach for the District. Her expertise lies in secondary special education. Joana also runs a non-profit organization Mind-Investors (currently registered in both Nigeria her country of birth and the United States of America) founded in 2012 dedicated to inspiring enthusiastic and dynamic learning as a means of nurturing a lifelong love of knowledge in the minds of Nigerian children.

Longtime Va-LEND Faculty Member Moving On

Va-LEND's (Virginia Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental Disabilities) tagline states, "Celebrating Over 23 years of Training the Next Generation of Maternal and Child Health Leaders." However, Va-LEND is also celebrating 23 years of unwavering leadership of Laura Duncan, MPH, RD, CRC. A faculty member since 1995, this pillar of Va-LEND is leaving the program. Duncan, whose area is in nutrition, specializing in the field of inborn errors of metabolism was asked to be part of Va-LEND in the very beginning of the program.

Munroe-Meyer Institute (NE UCEDD/LEND) Nets $1.2 million Department of Education Grant

Mark Shriver, Ph.D., professor of psychology and pediatrics at the Munroe-Meyer Institute, will be the project director on a new $1.2 million Department of Education grant from the Office of Special Education Programs. The five-year grant, which runs through a development year and four years of implementation, will train graduate students to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams to address significant behavior problems in schools.

Child Neurology Society Honors Kennedy Krieger Institute Pediatrician for Excellence in Physician Training (MD LEND)

At its recent annual meeting in Chicago, the Child Neurology Society presented Bruce K. Shapiro, MD, vice president, training at Kennedy Krieger Institute, with the Blue Bird Circle Training Director Award. Launched in 2013, the Blue Bird Circle Training Director Award is presented to a current or former child neurology residency program director who has demonstrated leadership and vision in program development, curriculum development, innovation in teaching methods or training requirements and who inspires trainees and colleagues alike in the practice of child neurology.

IDHD Student Visits Wolfensberger Archives (UCEDD IL)

In the summer of 2018, the Institute on Disability and Human Development (IDHD) at the University of Illinois at Chicago, the UCEDD for Illinois, sent PhD student Drew Egli to visit the Wolfensberger Archives in Omaha, Nebraska. Wolf Wolfensberger is a prominent name in the field of intellectual and developmental disabilities, he is probably best known for his advocacy and research that contributed to the deinstitutionalization movement and to a paradigm shift towards community inclusion that brought a sea change in thinking about people with disabilities.

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) Member Receives $2.3 Million NIH Director's New Innovator Award

Reyna Gordon, Ph.D., assistant professor of Otolaryngology and a Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (TN UCEDD, LEND, IDDRC) member, has received a National Institutes of Health (NIH) Director's New Innovator Award of $2.3 million in total costs for her project, "Biomarkers of Rhythmic Communication: Integrating Foundational and Translational Approaches."

Listen in as Liz sits down with Brittany Curry, aka "Inky Brittany," a graphic recorder and graphic facilitator. Brittany shares with Liz the multitude of ways graphic recording can be beneficial to all people, including those with a variety of disabilities.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's (CDC) National Center on Birth Defects and Developmental Disabilities and the Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) with support from the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), Maternal and Child Health Bureau (MCHB), announce a funding opportunity for Act Early Ambassadors to work with CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." RFA for CDC's "Learn the Signs. Act Early." 2019-2020 Ambassador Program.

2019 EHDI Meeting Scholarships for LEND Audiology Trainees

Application deadline: January 22, 2019.

AUCD has made available seven (7) scholarships of up to $500 each to support LEND audiology trainees in attending the in Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) Meeting on March 3-5, 2019 in Chicago, IL. All current LEND audiology trainees, including those in their externship year, are eligible to apply. However, priority will be given to trainees from programs that do not currently receive supplemental funding and trainees that have not attended the EHDI Meeting in previous years. Application deadline: January 20, 2019.

Texas Technology Access Program Director Position (TX UCEDD)

The Texas Technology Access Program is seeking applicants for the Director position. The Director of Texas Technology Access Project (TTAP) is responsible for development, implementation, and reporting of program activities mandated by the Assistive Technology Act of 2004 for the state of Texas. This federal program is statewide, comprehensive, and consumer responsive to Texans with disabilities for their access to and acquisition of assistive technology.

AUCD Welcomes E. Troy Washington as Senior Director of Finance and Grants Administration

E. Troy Washington is the Senior Director of Finance and Grants Administration at AUCD. Troy has over thirty years of accounting and grants experience. He has vast accounting experience leading financial operations for several organizations. His accounting experience includes financial statements and reporting, cash management, financial analysis, month and year-end closings, and audit preparation and analysis. He also has extensive expertise in federal grants oversight, compliance, policies and procedures.
