Announcing the Launch of the National Center on Disability in Public Health

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) is pleased to announce the new National Center on Disability in Public Health. The National Center uses evidence-based strategies to develop and increase the ability of public health professionals to include people who have disabilities. This new National Center builds capacity by encouraging collaboration between public health partners and AUCD's Network Centers in every state and territory. Key areas of health disparity serve as the focus areas for this National Center and include Nutrition and Healthy Weight, Developmental Monitoring and Screening, Sexual and Reproductive Health, Access to Healthcare, Wellness and Mental Health, and Emergency Preparedness.

Chinese Historical Society Honors SGISD Professor (MA UCEDD/LEND)

SGISD's Peter Kiang was presented with the Sojourner Award. The honor commemorates early Chinese immigrants who were sojourners - workers looking for a piece of Gold Mountain to send back to China, while building railroads, harvesting crops and working in factories.

Riley Child Development Center (IN LEND) Participates in Lectureship in Infant Mental Health

Faculty, staff and trainees from the Riley Child Development Center joined in hosting the annual Darlene Kardatzke Lectureship in Infant Mental Health, as a tribute to the professional endeavors of our dear friend and colleague Darlene Kardatzke, MD. The guest lecturer this year was Ayelet Talmi, PhD, a pediatric psychologist and associate professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine.

Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities Presents Inclusive Recreation Video Campaign (NY UCEDD/LEND)

Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities, the UCEDD at the University of Rochester is excited to present our Inclusive Recreation & Leisure Video Campaign! Sponsored by the Rochester Regional Center for Autism Spectrum Disorders (RRCASD) and the Strong Center for Developmental Disabilities (SCDD), the video campaign was created to advocate for full inclusion in recreation and leisure settings. Through discussion in SCDD's Community Advisory Council (CAC), we heard from the community that advocacy in this area was a need. Based on this need, we developed a planning committee, which included self-advocates, family-advocates, and professionals, to help guide us in the process of developing the campaign.

The University of Florida Disability Resource Center Support Within Accessible On-Campus Housing (FL UCEDD/LEND)

The University of Florida's Disability Resource Center is excited to announce the expansion of our elite state of the art accessible rooms within Cypress Hall. Cypress Hall will be expanding from 11 rooms outfitted with the SureHands lift system to 19 by the fall of 2019. The SureHands lift system, along with other accessibility features; such as video door bells, zero entry showers, and individual custom-fitted furniture, showcase UF as one of two in the nation whose campus truly embrace students with mobility impairments. UF being the only postsecondary education institution as a Top 10 research institution.

Think College awarded $2.5M Stepping Up Technology Implementation Grant (MA UCEDD/LEND)

Think College at the Institute for Community Inclusion (ICI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston is excited to announce that it has been awarded a $2.5 million Stepping Up Technology Implementation Grant from the US Department of Education Office of Special Education Programs. The project will fund the development of Future Quest Island - Explorations: Advancing College and Career Awareness for Elementary Students with and without Disability.

Think College Directors Receive Leadership Award (MA UCEDD/LEND)

The directors of Think College and authors of the acclaimed Think College! Postsecondary Education Options for Students with Intellectual Disabilities, Meg Grigal and Debra Hart, were awarded the George Jesien National Leadership Award at the State of the Art Conference in Syracuse University. Grigal and Hart have guided the development of federal and state policy and have informed the research and practice of thousands of educators. Their work has paved the way for the development of inclusive post-secondary education programs across the country and abroad.

ICI Researchers Promote Inclusive Education in Denmark and Ukraine (MN UCEDD/LEND)

Ren�ta Tich� and Brian Abery of ICI's Global Resource Center on Inclusive Education traveled to Denmark and Ukraine in late October to continue their international work supporting research on, and implementation of, inclusive education practices. In Denmark, Abery and Tich� shared their work on the implementation of Response to Intervention, as well as the use of curriculum-based measurement to drive instructional decision-making for students who experience significant cognitive disabilities, with faculty, researchers, and students at the 1st Annual Inclusive Education Summit sponsored by the University College of Northern Denmark and Aalborg University.

Tuesdays with Liz - The Autism CARES

Ivanova Smith is here to talk to Liz about Leadership Education in Neurodevelopmental and Related Disabilities (LEND) programs, which are funded through the Autism CARES Act. The act is up for renewal by Congress and needs to be reauthorized by September 30, 2019, in order to continue to provide funding for programs like LEND.

MD's 30th Annual Suicide Prevention Conference (MD UCEDD)

On October. 3, Mirian Ofonedu Ph.D, Training Director of the MCDD, Maureen van Stone, Esq, MS, Interim Director of the MCDD, along with Kiley Law, MD, MPH, and Paul Lipkin, MD of the Interactive Autism Network at Kennedy Krieger Institute presented on a panel titled, "Suicidality in Persons with Intellectual and/or Developmental Disabilities: Assessment and Intervention Strategies" at the Maryland 30th Annual Suicide Prevention Conference in Woodlawn, MD.

About the Autism CARES Act

Fact Sheet for 2019 Reauthorization

If Congress does not take action to reauthorize funding, available funds for LEND and other initiatives funded under the Autism CARES Act will expire in September 2019. This would eliminate interdisciplinary diagnostic services for hundreds of thousands of children, training training tens of thousands of graduate students, and important research being conducted around the nation.

Support the People of CNMI: Donate to Typhoon Yutu Relief

In mid-October 2018 our colleagues in the Commonwealth of Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) were hit with Super Typhoon Yutu. President Trump declared a major disaster in CNMI; you can read about the impact of the storm on residents in a 10-27 FEMA update and in Washington Post coverage (10-26). People with disabilities and the UCEDD in CNMI have been severely impacted.

Registration Closes October 31st! Pre-Conference Summit on Early Childhood

The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) and the Early Childhood/Intervention Special Interest Group (EC SIG) of AUCD have joined with The National Early Childhood Personnel Technical Assistance Center (ECPC), funded by the Office of Special Education Programs, U.S. Department of Education (OSEP), to host the Third Annual Summit on Early Childhood Personnel at AUCD's 2018 Annual Meeting.
