IDS Staff Members Play in 2019 Wheelchair Softball World Series (MS UCEDD)

Mississippi's UCEDD, the Institute for Disability Studies (IDS) was represented at the 2019 National Wheelchair Softball World Series (WSWS) by staff members, Sylvester Crosby and Robbie Sullivan, who joined their Deep South Hurricanes teammates to participate in the international competition in Kansas City, Kansas.

Caroline Coffield, PhD (NJ UCEDD/LEND) Receives Affiliate Faculty Appointment with Rutgers School of Social Work

In recognition of her significant contributions, Caroline Coffield, PhD, Director of Pre-service Training at The Boggs Center on Developmental Disabilities and NJLEND Training Director, was appointed as a Faculty Affiliate to the Rutgers School of Social Work. Dr. Coffield has taught a graduate course on Current Issues in Developmental Disabilities through the Rutgers School of Social Work in New Brunswick since 2013.

Derrick Willis Named Director of Iowa UCEDD

Derrick K. Willis, MPA, has assumed the leadership of Iowa's University Center for Excellence in Developmental Disabilities (UCEDD) at the Center for Disabilities and Development (CDD) within University of Iowa Health Care. He has served as the interim director of the UCEDD since January 2019. Willis has been instrumental in advancing the UCEDD's outreach to under-served populations since joining Iowa's UCEDD as associate director in August 2019. He has led diversity efforts for the UCEDD, and the successful continuation of the state's Money Follows the Person program.

IDHD Faculty Awarded Fulbright Scholarship for AT in Croatia (IL UCEDD/LEND)

The Institute on Disability and Human Development (IDHD) faculty Dr. Patricia Politano has been selected for a J. William Fulbright Foreign Scholarship Award to lend her expertise on assistive technology to Croatia. Dr. Politano is a speech-language pathologist that has worked as an augmentative communication (AAC) specialist for over 25 years and has consulted internationally on AAC and assistive technology (AT).

IDHD Professor Dr. Grossman Receives Switzer Fellowship (IL UCEDD/LEND)

Institute on Disability and Human Development (IDHD) faculty Dr. Brian R. Grossman received the Switzer Distinguished Fellowship Award from NiDILRR. Dr. Grossman is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Disability and Human Development at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC).

Adapting Books; Where Community and Creativity Connect (OR UCEDD/LEND)

This year as a LEND Fellow at the Institute on Development and Disability at Oregon Health and Science University, I was given the opportunity to spend time creating a leadership project that combined several passions of mine; community engagement, crafts, and pediatrics! With the support of an awesome interdisciplinary team through the Early Access to Assistive Technology Clinic at the Child Development and Rehabilitation Center and Oregon Go Baby Go, I was able to partner with local organizations to host "Adapted Book Nights." At these events, therapists, clinicians, teachers, and parents meet in community spaces to adapt board books for children with motor and or visual impairments.

AUCD's National Center on Disability in Public Health Working for You

AUCD's National Center on Disability in Public Health (NCDPH) builds capacity by encouraging collaboration between public health partners and AUCD's Network Centers. Key areas of health disparity serve as the focus areas for this National Center and include: Access to Healthcare, Developmental Monitoring and Screening, Emergency Preparedness, Nutrition and Healthy Weight, Wellness and Mental Health, and Sexual and Reproductive Health.

ICI (MA UCEDD/LEND) Researchers Win $600K Grant from Department of Education

The ICI has been awarded a 2-year, $600,000 grant from the Department of Education Institute of Education Sciences, National Center for Special Education Research. The grant will fund a study titled "Moving Transition Forward: Exploration of College-based and Conventional Transition Practices for Students with Intellectual Disability and Autism."

OHSU UCEDD Announces the Sexual Health Resources Hub is Live

The UCEDD at Oregon Health & Science University is excited announce that the Sexual Health Resources hub, featured on our website, is live. Developed as part of the Sexual Health Equity for Individuals with Intellectual/Developmental Disabilities (SHEIDD) project, a collaboration with Multnomah County in Portland, OR, this hub provides resources to promote holistic sexual health education for people with I/DD.

Announcing our 2019-2020 Emerging Leaders Interns!

AUCD is pleased to introduce the 2019-2020 AUCD Emerging Leaders Interns: Meghan Breheney, a third-year Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Fellow at the Bronx LEND, and Jazmin Burns, a Postdoctoral Scholar Fellow at the UC Davis MIND Institute LEND. Both will serve as visible ambassadors to the broader AUCD network, interacting with AUCD staff at all levels and the AUCD Board of Directors' Emerging Leaders Representative.
