Announcing our 2019-2020 Emerging Leaders Interns!

AUCD is pleased to introduce the 2019-2020 AUCD Emerging Leaders Interns: Meghan Breheney, a third-year Developmental and Behavioral Pediatrics Fellow at the Bronx LEND, and Jazmin Burns, a Postdoctoral Scholar Fellow at the UC Davis MIND Institute LEND. Both will serve as visible ambassadors to the broader AUCD network, interacting with AUCD staff at all levels and the AUCD Board of Directors' Emerging Leaders Representative.

We were thrilled to receive over 420 proposals for the AUCD 2019 Conference. All proposal notifications have been sent out; please check your email to be sure you have received yours. Changes to session titles, presenter listings, or other requests are due to AUCD not later than September 23.

Access All Day (OH UCEDD/LEND)

The LEND Program at the University of Cincinnati UCEDD provides training to Cincinnati Zoo and Botanical Garden staff to help make the zoo more accessible for people with disabilities and their families. The last two years, the zoo has hosted an Access for All Day, where they invite the community to take part in the progress they've made to make the zoo more accessible such as: adult changing tables, sensory friendly restrooms, planning maps, social narratives, visual supports, sensory bags and more.

ICI (MA UCEDD/LEND) Wins Grant to Examine Transfer-of-Rights and Guardianship

Recently, ICI was awarded funding from the Institute of Education Sciences through its Special Education Research Grants Program. The project is entitled "Exploring How Transfer-of-Rights and Guardianship Discussions May Affect Transition Outcomes for Students with Intellectual Disabilities." Funding will begin September 1, 2019, is anticipated through 2023, and will be in the amount of approximately $360,000 per year for the 4-year grant period.

In Memoriam: Carolyn Bridgemohan, MD

Dr. Carolyn Bridgemohan global leading expert on Autism passed away on August 16th. Dr. Bridgemohan was a dedicated physician at Boston Childrens Hospital, and her passion inspired both of her daughters to pursue careers in medicine. Carolyn started out as one of the first full time faculty in Developmental-Behavioral pediatrics at Boston Children's Hospital and went on to become the co-director of the Autism Spectrum Center. She served on many boards, authored and reviewed numerous medical publications, lectured globally as a leading expert on Autism, and taught over 1,000 students at Harvard Medical School who now will continue to forward the field she championed. She will be dearly missed by her colleagues and patients.

Kansas KUCDD/LEND Community Advisory Panel Annual Meeting

The KUCDD/LEND Community Advisory Panel (CAP) held their annual, face-to-face meeting on July 12th in Salina, KS. Ski Adams, outgoing Chairperson was honored for his years of service as a member for the CAP with a plaque and the announcement of the new sign that will hang at KUCDD acknowledging and honoring CAP Chairpersons over time. Chris Testorff was welcomed in his leadership role, as our new Chairperson.

Mailman Center for Child Development LEND Trainee Awarded JCCAP Launch Award (FL UCEDD/LEND)

Pediatric psychology intern Nicole Lorenzo, second left in picture, was awarded the Journal of Clinical Child and Adolescent Psychology (JCCAP) Launch Award. She received this recognition during the JCCAP Future Directions Forum on June 28-29 in Washington, DC.

Maryland LEND Faculty Receives Grant to Increase Access

Mary L. O'Connor Leppert, M.B., B.Ch., B.A.O., a former LEND trainee and current LEND faculty, and Dr. Joyce Harrison, MD received a grant from the state of Maryland to continue their work to increase access of children with neurodevelopmental and mental health disorders by building capacity of primary care physicians to identify and manage these disorders.

Promising Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Study on Treating Core Symptoms in Rett Syndrome Supports Further Trials

Vanderbilt Kennedy Center (IDDRC, UCEDD, LEND) Director Jeffrey Neul, M.D., Ph.D., and colleagues studied the safety and effectiveness of the drug trofinetide in female children and adolescents (age 5-15) with Rett syndrome (RTT). Findings were recently published in the journal Neurology and show promise for improving core features associated with the rare disease, supporting further trials.

CT LEND Students Sign Bill with CT Governor to Enhance Communication Between First Responders and Children and Adults with Disabilities

The UConn UCEDD staff and LEND students were invited to a bill signing of HB 7000 (PA 19-147) with Connecticut Governor Ned Lamont. Governor Lamont praised the students and UCEDD for all the work they had done on the bill. Governor Lamont told the students how proud they should be for making a real difference in the world for the disability community. Representative Linehan, who met with the LEND students at the Capitol, worked with them on enhancing the UConn UCEDD's Emergency Preparation Flipbook to include a communication aid that would enhance communication between first responders and children and adults with disabilities.

Kansas LEND CARE-A-Van

Kansas LEND faculty "hit the road" bringing services and training to rural parts of Kansas. As part of our mission to improve access to care and build capacity, LEND faculty drove a CARE-A-Van nearly 800 miles from Kansas City to Garden City and Hays, Kansas. While there, the team worked closely with local school districts and providers to conduct autism and developmental evaluations.

Program Launched for Special Education Students to Combat Social Isolation (NE UCEDD/LEND)

The Munroe-Meyer Institute and Millard Public Schools will partner on new social and recreational skills development programs for special education students with autism and other forms of intellectual and developmental disabilities, designed to decrease social isolation and prepare students for life after school. "Social and life skills development is essential for the long-term prosperity of every individual," said Karoly Mirnics, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Munroe-Meyer Institute.
