Institute for Disability Studies First Self Advocate Coordinator
NIFE MS Deputy Ambassador Taylor Carley is the Institute for Disability Studies at the University of Southern Mississippi first self-advocacy coordinator. Carley works on several of the institute's transition projects, but he is also the host of the weekly video series, Chit Chat Thursday with Taylor.

Nutrition Advocate Reflects on NIFE MS Workshop Experience
Arteya McGuire served as Nutrition Advocate for the workshop held in Greenwood in the Mississippi Delta. Twelve people attended the workshop. "The NIFE workshop was a great experience," said McGuire, who works for the Mississippi State Department of Health. "The workshop offered a lot of healthy tips that can be used in our communities."

Georgetown University Certificate in Early Intervention Celebrates the Accomplishments of the Sixth Cohort of Participants! (Georgetown UCEDD)
The Georgetown University Center for Child and Human Development honored the students who completed the 2017-2018 program with a celebration on June 15, 2018. The event was part of a day-long conference hosted by the Georgetown University Center for Excellance in Developmental Disabilities, the DC Developmental Disability Council, University Legal Services, the P & A for the District of Columbia, and the Quality Trust. Participants included alumni, faculty, and service providers from the DC area.

The Opioid Crisis: A Child's Fight and a Mother's Gain
Robin Adams tells of the challenges and joys of adopting a baby affected by his birth mother's opioid use. The drug test came back positive for opioids and the needle puncture sites in the young, pregnant woman's arms were infected. At just 92 pounds, neither she nor her unborn child were benefiting from any nutritional intake. She returned to her OB/GYN six weeks later, keeping few prenatal appointments in total. When she returned, she was prepared; she had another person's urine in her purse. But she fooled no one, and her physician offered to help her find treatment and recommended a facility where she could receive medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and medical care. She denied her drug use and rejected the referral.

Deputy Nutrition Ambassadors Speak About Teaching Their Peers
People with disabilities hear a lot of "you can't eat this" or "you can't eat that" from health care professionals, but do not receive much nutrition education other than that. The Nutrition is for Everyone Oklahoma (NIFE OK) project allowed us to actually show people which foods are healthy and which foods are not. We also taught some basic cooking skills that most people do not know and demonstrated how it can be cheaper to eat at home instead of fast food. The peer-to-peer teaching was important because everyone was more than willing to listen.

NIFE TN Intern's Perspective on Working with Students with Disabilities
Nutrition Is for Everyone Tennessee (NIFE TN) focused on reaching out to Postsecondary Education Programs in Tennessee. These are university-based programs for students with intellectual disabilities, where part of their curriculums includes health based learning. The Nutrition Ambassador utilized and encouraged the local university nutrition programs (dietetic interns and senior undergraduate dietetic students) to help teach classes. With an outline for the topic to be covered, the interns/students filled in with lecture, in-class activities, homework assignments, and food tastings. In sharing their nutrition knowledge, the dietetic students/interns also learned about working with people with developmental or intellectual disabilities.

Deputy Ambassadors Reflect on Experiences Working with Spanish Speaking Families
Nutrition education for people with disabilities is lacking, especially among Spanish-speaking families. The opportunity we had with Nutrition is for Everyone to specifically impact the Spanish-speaking families was unique and we were able to make a positive impact in a short amount of time. We immediately gained the trust of the community because we are Spanish-speaking and also have children with disabilities. We also made connections with health clinics within the community and so we taught classes in locations they were already familiar with.

Nutrition is for Everyone Special Interest Group (SIG) Launch
The Nutrition is for Everyone (NIFE) pilot project (2016-2018) was funded by the Walmart Foundation to provide nutrition education for people with disabilities (PWD). NIFE was launched in four states (Arkansas, Louisiana, Oklahoma, and Tennessee) where PWD are least likely to consume fruits and vegetables daily and are therefore most in need of nutrition education and support. The state of Mississippi was included in year two (2017-2018) of the project. Between 2016 and 2018, NIFE reached over 300,000 people with and without disabilities through efforts such as social media outreach, television appearances, news articles, workshops, and the NIFE newsletter.

Eight Participants Graduate from University of Rochester Medical Center (URMC) Project SEARCH (NY UCEDD/LEND)
Project SEARCH, an international program with over 400 sites worldwide, helps young adults with developmental disabilities secure employment by providing employment training and education through on-site internships at various local organizations and businesses. Over 70 percent of interns find competitive employment after participating.

NEW One Page Informational Flyers for AUCD Councils
The AUCD Board of Directors has established a number of committees and councils made up of experts in the field to help the leadership address emerging trends and issues, and to facilitate communication across and beyond the AUCD network. AUCD has five councils which are open to any AUCD member interested in learning more about these issues. Recently AUCD council chairs created an easy to share resource to describe what each council does. Below are links to each council one-page flyer. Please feel free to share these resources with faculty, staff, and trainees within your center and encourage their participation in council activities with peers across AUCD's national network.

AUCD Strongly Opposes Decision to Let Electric Shock Treatments Continue
The Association of University Centers on Disabilities (AUCD) stands with many other national disability organizations in strongly opposing the recent decision by a Probate and Family Court judge to allow a school in Canton, Massachusetts, to continue administering electric shocks to students with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Coach to Communicate (C2C) (TX UCEDD)
Dr. Jennifer Ganz is the project director for the Coach To Communicate project which provides a webinar and face-to-face/online individual parent coaching sessions at no cost for parents, caregivers, teachers, and service providers of children with autism spectrum disorder. Participants will be instructed in how to improve the communication skills of their own children. This project serves Texas parents, caregivers, teachers, or service providers who have a child up to age 22 with autism spectrum disorder or similar characteristics and who need instruction in communication skills.
